Moda News - Capacitybuilders funding programme 'Improving Reach'

Representatives of 25 organisations and netowrks attended MODA event on 21 September at Bordman House.

Jill Walsh, London Regional Co-ordinator of Capacitybuilders, presented a briefing session on the new Capacitybuilders funding programme 'Improving Reach' which was launched on 11 August 2006.The presentation was delivered in clear simple language and covered all aspects of the new funding, what it is for, who can apply and how and the time scale and requirements. The briefing was followed by a one-hour long questions and answers which the participants found very useful. Improving Reach is a pilot programme which will run until March 2008.

The aim of the Improving Reach programme is to improve access to capacity building and support for a range of frontline groups / organisations that may not have been reached in previous ChangeUp programmes.
In particular the programme is aimed at :

  • Black and minority ethnic groups
  • Refugee and migrant groups
  • Faith groups
  • Isolated rural groups

Improving Reach is open to all eligible organisations and is not restricted to existing ChangeUp consortia in recognition of the barriers to participation which may have limited some organisations active involvement in ChangeUp to date. For more information click here

Moda News - MODA's Dynamic Website Project for community organisations launched

MODA has recently set up a special project to help ethnic minorities and migrant organisations to promote their activities and services on the web. Particularly, MODA promotes the development and customization of a Dynamic Website, with a very effective and user friendly interface, which can allow you to manage and update your website without any specific IT knowledge. It is a simple easily usable website which you can access, use, edit, update at any internet point or café in the world without need for any extra tools or software.

We can develop a complete dynamic website within 1-2 weeks. That’s because we are going to use a template – we have specifically developed for community organisations - that will be customised according to your necessities.

Events - International Day of Action on Migrant Rights “For Freedom of Movement & the Right to Stay”

Saturday 7 October 2006 - March for Migrant Rights: 3rd International Day of Action for Migrant Rights
Starting at 12 noon from the gardens of the Imperial War Museum

Sunday 8 October 2006 - 10 am-5 pm - Conference on Migrant Rights and Regularisation
Queen Mary’s University, Geography Department, Main Lecture Theatre, Mile End. Tube: Mile End, Stepney Green.

In an echo of recent actions in the US, the UK's migrants are coming out of the shadows and  demanding that their rights are recognised. Saturday October 7 will see a march through London demanding equal rights for all. The organisers are calling on migrants, asylum seekers and their friends, families and colleagues to join the demonstration and build a movement to change conditions for migrants for the better.
For many people migration is essential to escape human rights abuses, conflict and poverty. In turn people from all over the world help fuel UK prosperity, with London's diversityan important ingredient in its successful bid to host the Olympics. However, many migrants are deprived of their full rights in employment and access to public services, while at the same time being vilified as "illegal" by politicians and media and living in daily fear of detention and deportation. The march on October 7 will start at 12 noon from the gardens of the Imperial War Museum (Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park) and proceed through south London towards the city.

October 7 activities will take place in various cities across Europe and in Africa, forming the Third International Day of Action on Migration. This action results from  the Migration Assembly which  took place at the European Social Forum in Athens in June. It builds  on the appeal launched by various organisations during the World Social Forum in Bamako, Mali, in January and will lead to a major European Assembly on Migrant Rights and Regularisation in 2007.

Taking their lead from  the ESF manifesto,  the various groups organising the march are calling for:

  • Regularisation for the migrants who are in the UK irregularly because they are refused asylum applicants, trafficked people or visa overstayers
  • The right of all present in the UK to work and to be protected from destitution
  • The closure of all detention centres and an end to the ‘externalisation process’ through which detention centres and other forms of migration control are established outside the borders of the EU
  • Social justice and security of livelihood for all
  •  UK sign up to the UN International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers.

On Sunday October 8 (10am-5pm) a conference will be held at Queen Mary University where migrant communities, activists and specialists in the field will discuss the possibilities and implications of a regularisation in the UK.

Events - Equality in our lifetime?

Seminar on the Discrimination Law Review – help influence the future of equality law
Thursday 9 November, 9.30am-2.00pm
City Hall, C ommittee Room 5, The Queens Walk, Riverside, London Bridge Thursday 9 November from

This seminar is being organised to encourage public debate on the Discrimination Law Review and the future shape of equality law. It will be an opportunity for stakeholder organisations to hear informed opinion from a wide range of experts and campaigners, and to put forward their own views on what the content of a Single Equality Act should be.
The Discrimination Law Review (DLR) was announced in February 2005. Yet still no proposals have been put forward on how anti-discrimination law should be improved to produce a Single Equality Act and ‘a simpler, fairer legal framework that fits the needs of 21st century Britain’. Maximum public discussion is urgently needed to ensure that this once in a generation opportunity to create laws which fully tackle inequality and discrimination is grasped. The Mayor fully supports the maximum public consultation at all stages in the development of new legislation – particularly involving those most affected by discrimination – as necessary to create a wide consensus for the equality law we need. This seminar is being organised to raise awareness and help stimulate discussion and consultation. It is part of a process of consultation on the future of equality and will be followed by other seminars and initiatives.

If you wish to attend this free event you are encouraged to book your place early. Please register your details by emailing: paul.jenkins@london.gov.uk

Calls - CEMVO - Volunteering in the Third Age (VITA) - New Trustees Initiative

CEMVO has been commissioned by the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS) to develop a project called Volunteering in the Third Age (VITA) to place older people of Asian origin as trustees with voluntary sector organisations.

The project is designed to help us to understand:

  • Whether targeted approaches to trustee recruitment within minority ethnic communities provide an effective way of widening participation and encouraging leadership.
  • Whether provision of regular structured individual support to both prospective trustees and their host organisations adds value, facilitates and enhances their shared board-level experience.

We will be recruiting potential new trustees and host organisations from June to end of October 2006 and in doing so, the project aims to;

  • Equip potential trustees with the skills and expertise to contribute effectively to their (or other) communities through one-to-one support on a monthly basis from an appointed CEMVO staff and close supervision at board meetings
  • Increase board level skills base and creativity through matching potential trustees with the necessary board skills, professional and cultural experience
  • Increased social networks for participants and increased potential stakeholder support for host organisations

The project will last for nine months in all. Support from an experienced member of CEMVO’s team will be available for 5 months for each new trustee and their placement organisation. Meetings and interviews will be recorded for research purposes.

We wish to learn more about the kinds of issues that are encountered by new trustees, and by the organisations placing them, to develop ways of utilising and where appropriate extending the types of capacity building services that CEMVO can offer in the future.

Once we have matched potential trustees with host organisations a meeting will take place between them to enable them to agree to the placement. After that CEMVO will hold a meeting to induct all participants to the programme. This will take place in October 2006. From October 2006 - March 2007 CEMVO will offer training in trustee skills and responsibilities and follow this up as necessary over the 5 months duration of the placement in the project. The intention is that trustees would continue when their training and mentoring period finishes.

A lunch allowance of £5.00 and reasonable standard class travel expenses for potential trustees will be reimbursed by the project (from CEMVO).

All those who participate in the project for the full six month period will receive a £ 100 retail voucher and a letter from CEMVO to say that they have completed the training, and names will be entered into our prize draw, with a laptop computer as first prize.

If you are interested in participating in the project or for further information, please contact Wai Yeung at CEMVO: Tel. (020) 84320012, Email wai.yeung@cemvo.co.uk (www.cemvo.co.uk).

This suite of materials, or toolkit, is designed to provide practical advice, tools and examples drawn from practice and offers key messages about implementing the duty. It is advisable to read these materials alongside the DRC Codes of Practice.

Funding - City Parochial: Tackling poverty in London

City Parochial Foundation (CPF) and Trust for London (TfL) two of London’s most significant independent charitable funders launch their new project: Tackling poverty in London.

While London is one of the wealthiest and most diverse cities in the world, its prosperity resides cheek by jowl with unacceptable levels of poverty and disadvantage. It has some of the poorest neighbourhoods in the country with high levels of deprivation, unemployment, inequality, homelessness, poor health and pollution. Improving employment opportunities for disadvantaged people; promoting the inclusion of recent arrivals to the UK; promoting social justice; and strengthening the voluntary and community sector are the new priorities for CPF for its next five year period. For CPF’s sister fund, Trust for London, the emphasis over the next five years will be on challenging discrimination faced by disabled people; promoting the inclusion and integration of recently established communities; strengthening mother-tongue and supplementary schools to provide creative educational opportunities; and addressing new and emerging needs.

Both CPF and TfL have decided to make fewer but larger grants and to enhance the ‘funding plus’ approach both have developed over the years. Grants are not given in isolation, but additional support and training is offered to help organisations grow and develop, achieve additional benefits through creative approaches, and learn from their work.

For further information please contact Bharat Mehta, Mubin Haq or Sioned Churchill on 020 7606 6145 or you can download the new CPF grant guidelines from here and the new TfL grant guidelines from here.
