Events - Women and Volunteering

Wednesday 6 June, 10am – 1pm, Women’s Resource Centre, 33-41 Dallington Street, EC1V 0BB

The Women’s Resource Centre (WRC), in partnership with the Commission on the Future of Volunteering, is currently gathering information on women and volunteering for the Commission’s report to be published later this year.

This event has been organised as part of a consultation which aims to discover what people think is happening to volunteering in the present, and what they believe should happen to volunteering in ten years time. The event is for female volunteers and/or volunteer managers, and should be a fabulous networking opportunity for those who play a vital role in their organisations, and who often do not get the support and recognition they deserve.

The event will include a networking lunch and opportunities to contribute your experiences and opinions to the Commission. The event will be attended by Meta Zimmeck, of Volunteering England, and by Baroness Neuberger, Chair of the Commission.

If you’d like to attend the event please download and complete the booking (click here). For more information please contact Nikki at the WRC on 020 7324 3030 or email: nikki@wrc.org.uk.

Events - Refugee Week 2007

18th- 24th June 2007

Refugee Week is a UK-wide programme of arts, cultural and educational events that celebrate the contribution of refugees to the UK, and encourages a better understanding between communities. Refugee Week 2007 will take place from 18th to 24th June.

As in 2006, there will be no specific theme for Refugee Week 2007. Event organisers are encouraged to organise events around the idea that Refugee Week is a space of encounters between different communities and an opportunity to use more creative ways to bring refugee experiences closer to wider audiences.

Every year during Refugee Week hundreds of events are organised across the UK. In 2006, there were over 450 small and large events, ranging from big music festivals and art exhibitions to political debates, film screenings, conferences, school activities, sports and community events etc.

Training - Working with unaccompained children

Monday 18th June 10.30 – 4.30, The Resource Centre, 356 Holloway Road, London N7 6PA
Monday 25th June 10.30 – 4.30, Lambeth Accord, 336 Brixton Road, London SW9 7AA

Refugee Community Organisations are invited to book a place on a free one-day course provided by the Refugee Council on 'Working with unaccompanied children'.
In 2005, 1 in 10 new asylum applicants was an unaccompanied child. More agencies are becoming involved with supporting these young people and this course is aimed at those who would benefit from a better understanding of the systems that they will become involved with. Do take this opportunity to join with others and learn more.
This course has been designed specifically for refugee community organisations and other small voluntary agencies that would like to or currently provide advice and support to unaccompanied children. Children seeking asylum in the UK, with no family members to look after them, often need help to get the support they are entitled to, for example from social services. This course aims to provide participants with information and guidance on how the government’s asylum and support systems work and looks at what role different agencies play.

For further information and booking contact: Judith Dennis, Refugee Council, fax 020 7737 3306, email: judith.dennis@refugeecouncil.org.uk.

Training - Introduction to Sustainable Funding

Tuesday 3 July, 9.30am - 4pm, NCVO, Regent’s Wharf, London N1 9RL
Cost: £20 for the full day (including lunch and refreshments)

This workshop, led by trainers from the NCVO’s Sustainable Funding Project, is aimed at voluntary and community organisations wishing to explore financial sustainability through:

  • Income diversification – exploring a sustainable and diverse funding mix of income sources
  • Planning – an understanding of strategic planning and the role of robust financial management
  • Earning – generating income through contractual work and trading goods and services
  • Loan Finance – an awareness of the use of loans and other forms of finance as a catalyst to develop your organisation

The event does not provide information on sources of funds. Instead it encourages voluntary and community organisations to explore a whole range of issues around funding. So if you want an overview of sustainable funding, with a particular emphasis on generating income from trading goods and services, then this event is for you. The event will be as interactive as possible, with a mix of presentations, small group work and open discussion.

Training - Inspiring and enabling collaboration

Tuesday 12 June, 10.00am - 4.00pm, London (booking fees apply)

Collaboration can make your voluntary sector strong, successful and sustainable – efficiently and effectively meeting community needs. But how do you make it happen? How do you get people together to discuss meeting shared needs, connected services, and minimising duplication? And how do you turn that talk into action?

This workshop will show you how to inspire and enable collaboration. It will: Give you an overview of collaboration, the drivers, context and why it's so high on the agenda; Give you ideas for where collaboration might be used and how; Provide tools for preparing for and running that first meeting; Give you tips on facilitating meetings and keeping things moving; Identify possible obstacles and how to overcome them; Identify models of collaboration; Show you how organisations can achieve more together than they could alone. The event is intended for infrastructure organisations, partnership officers, and all those who are involved in inspiring and enabling collaborations.

For more information contact Susan Beckett on 020 7520 2440, email collaborate@ncvo-vol.org.uk or visit NCVO website (click here).

The Committee has four areas of interest all of which are concerned with reducing crime associated with guns, gangs and weapons but only supporting the community and voluntary agencies. They are:

  • Developing a guns, gangs & weapons mediation and transformation service in partnership with the Metropolitan Police Service
  • Supporting the work of the GGW Practitioner Forum
  • Contributing to the joint 5 Boroughs Gangs Project
  • Supporting new and innovative crime reduction projects including those supporting victims of crime

The Foundation will be commissioning projects directly for the first three categories and opening up the final category to applications from all community and voluntary agencies throughout London working to reduce guns, gangs and weapons crime.
The funding available for the final category is £75,000. They are looking to support a number of projects with grants up to £15,000. Jobs - Volunteer position: Ad hoc Migrant Domestic Workers assistance

We would like to train a group of volunteers who would be able to assist, on an ad-hoc basis, newly registered Migrant Domestic Workers (MDWs) at Kalayaan. Many MDWs who are new to London need initial support in accessing services and navigating their way around the city.

We would provide training for volunteers to: Assist a MDW to report a passport as stolen to the police; Accompany a MDW to their embassy; Accompany a MDW to find new accommodation; Assist a MDW to register with a GP; Accompany them to a lawyer/other agency.

  • Who are MDWs?: these are domestic workers who have accompanied an employer from overseas to work in their private household. They are often subject to physical and psychological abuse and exploitation forcing many to run away.
  • What does Kalayaan do?: Kalayaan provides MDWs with immigration and employment advice, and support in order for them to access their rights.
  • Ad-hoc basis?: this means we will call to see if and when you are available to assist a MDW. We will arrange a time to suit you and the MDW. There will not be a requirement for a permanent presence in the office.
  • How long is the commitment?: The busiest time of year is over the summer, so this would be when we need most support, however we would also welcome interest from volunteers wanting to commit on a long-term basis.
  • Training: We are hoping to organise a half day workshop for the 31st May 2007. Please indicate if you would be able to attend this.

How to I apply?: Please contact Camilla@kalayaan.org.uk with CV and availability by 25th May 2007.
For more information about Kalayaan please visit www.kalayaan.org.uk
