- Next Week is the Refugee Week! |
Refugee Week is a UK-wide programme of arts, cultural and educational events that celebrate the contribution of refugees to the UK, and encourages a better understanding between communities. As in 2006, there will be no specific theme for Refugee Week 2007. Event organisers are encouraged to organise events around the idea that Refugee Week is a space of encounters between different communities and an opportunity to use more creative ways to bring refugee experiences closer to wider audiences. Every year during Refugee Week hundreds of events are organised across the UK. In 2006, there were over 450 small and large events, ranging from big music festivals and art exhibitions to political debates, film screenings, conferences, school activities, sports and community events etc. For further information about events and collaborations please click here. |

As Refugee Week is a celebration of the contribution of refugees to the UK through a programme of arts, cultural and educational events, the first guest editor is an artist - Margareta Kern - who explores whether labels such as 'refugee art' or refugee artist' are help or a hindrance. On Wednesday, 13 June, a second piece from Jon Cruddas, MP for Dagenhama, was published and on Friday, 15 June, a Zimbabwean refugee gives his own perspective on asylum. Please feel free to add your own comment to this pieces (just click on 'comments' at the end of Margareta's piece) - what are your own thoughts or experiences on these subjects? |
