Events - Action on Homelessness: Hand out or hand up?

19 July 2007, 9am-5pm
St Paul’s, Robert Adam St, London W1

Voluntary church and faith groups are good at giving essential help like food and clothes to people who are homeless and excluded. Is there a tension between meeting immediate needs and encouraging people toward independence? How best can we help people move on from homelessness? And who decides?

How many times have you been to a meeting or a conference, most likely filled with inspiring speakers, only to find the most interesting conversations take place during the coffee breaks? Open Space Technology takes advantage of this type of interaction. Participants’ own questions and interests will drive the event. By the end of the event every issue of concern to anybody will be raised, if they took responsibility for doing that.

For more information or to book contact Ellen Byrne or Alastair Murray at Housing Justice email: e.byrne@housingjustice.org.uk, 020 7723 7273/235

Call - Tackling Race and Faith Hate Crime - What can YOU do?

Read on to find out what your community organisation can do to tackle race and faith hate crime, and to claim a bursary of £200.

As part of the drive to “One City” the Safer Westminster Partnership is determined to ensure that race and faith hate crime is not tolerated or accepted. We are committed to taking a stand against these actions.

VAW believes that youhold the key to this issue; you are uniquely placed to encourage and support community members to report race and faith crimes (anonymously if they prefer), so that they are no longer tolerated, accepted or covered up in Westminster.

VAW is looking to work with 20 community groups between now and March 2008 to tackle this issue. They can offer:

  • bursaries of £200 for community groups which hold meetings or one to one discussions with at least 50 members of their communities on this subject.
  • One to one support and training for community groups leaders so that they are fully briefed on race and faith hate crime.
  • Partnership development, capacity building and fundraising support for groups which would like to undertake more work in this field.
