MODA News - MODA successes good news for all London voluntary sector
 


This is a year of success and progress for MODA and consequently for hundreds of community organisations benefiting from its services and programmes.

Quality Support Project
Big Lottery Fund have agreed to transfer the funds to MODA to continue the project after our partner organisation went into administration in April. This is good news for more than 50 community groups that have been receiving training and technical support from the project. Our full time officers Victor and Suj will restart their full engagement with the groups from August 2007. We will also be recruiting new benificiaries. The project aims to build up quality systems, policies and procedures of the beneficiary organisations to meet the standards of obtaining Quality Mark or PQASSO. Outreach Capacity Building Support Project
The City Bridge Trust has agreed to fund this project for the next three years. The target is to provide 1-2-1 targeted technical support to up to 30 small charities every year to build up their governance and operational structures, increase their planning know-how and increase their access to resources and funding through offering them 1-2-1 advice and practical help. Celebrating Sanctuary is an extraordinary event which gathers together established and emerging refugee musicians, dancers and artists to celebrate the positive cultural contribution of refugees to the UK. Now in its 8th year, Celebrating Sanctuary demonstrates that such a vibrant panorama of sight, sound, aroma and taste would not exist had it not been for the UK’s hard won tradition of providing sanctuary to those fleeing persecution from many parts of the globe.

For this occasion a weekend free events are organised at the Barbican Centre, including:

New Crowned Hope joins with the Celebrating Sanctuary Festival on behalf of the Refugee Council, to welcome performers from London's vibrant refugee communities to the Festival Stage for two free afternoons of dazzling musical diversity.

    Brass troubadours combining the swagger of a Balkan wedding band with the riotous energy of a Latin carnival.

Events - What's feminism got to do with it?

The Women's Resource Centre, in association with the Directory of Social Change, is hosting a debate on the role of feminism in the women's voluntary and community sector. Do you have to be a feminist to work in the women's sector? Is feminism the key to women's activism or an exclusive, outdated or unhelpful concept?

Chaired by Natasha Walter (Guardian columnist, author of The New Feminism, and co-ordinator of Women for Refugee Women), this event will bring together speakers from within the sector and beyond to debate the importance of feminism in the modern women's voluntary sector.

The BME Chair and Trustee Network has been set up by BTEG to support the professional development of BME Chairs and Trustees and to promote and support an environment of shared learning and collaborations. Funded by the governance hub, the network will provide training programmes and resources that will help build the skills needed to help your organisation survive in today’s climate of reduced funding and increasing contract work.
The launch will provide you with the opportunity to hear more about the network, meet other BME chairs and trustees and listen to guest speakers as they talk about the important role of chairs and trustees within the BME voluntary and community sector.

Events - Choir of Sierra Leone School for the blind

There are 20 children and young adults in the choir. All are blind. The UK tour will provide a memorable experience for these exceptionally gifted and talented young people and provide urgently needed funds for the school after the long civil war.

Events - Refugee Therapy Centre Open Afternoon

This will be another opportunity for staff and volunteers from Refugee Community Organisations, as well as other professionals working with refugees, to visit the Centre. You can learn more about our work and the services we are providing, and have your questions answered about how to refer clients.

There will also be a chance to get involved with the Refugee Community Representatives Steering Committee, which advises the Centre’s work.

Training - Faith Regen Foundation : Women in Action Network


Two training days on 3rd/17th August

Faith Regen Foundation is a multi-faith regeneration charity which works with disadvantaged communities to promote social cohesion. They use their intimate knowledge of faith communities to help improve communications, develop good practise and tailor initiatives to combat social exclusion and empower disadvantaged individuals and groups.

Faith Regen Foundation are providing a unique opportunity for women who work in the voluntary and community sectors to take part in their Women in Action Network, bringing together all the essential elements for these organisations to successfully operate in London. Through the Women in Action Network

  • Free training will be provided in their Faith Communities Navigator. The training will increase your understanding of the 9 major faiths and how this sensitivity will benefit your organisation, and help you to engage with community faith groups.
  • The role of WIAN in the current social climate and their ongoing role in effectively responding to the challenges faced by communities.
  • How to succeed in funding, and funding opportunities.
  • Working towards sustainability in the VCS
  • Networking opportunities with other voluntary organisations in London.

The Faith Communities Navigator which will provide participants with an ideal opportunity to expand their knowledge and understanding of the different faiths. The Navigator training normally starts from £500 per person/session. All participants in the Women in Action Network will receive this training at no cost.

Training - Management Training for women


Start date: third week in September 2007
End date: April 2008
Final date for enrollment: 16th August 2007

Account3 in conjunction with Hillcroft Womens College will be providing training for the ILM Level 3 Management Qualification from September. The course is completely free (funded by ESF Co-financing) and is open to women who do not already have a management qualification but are working or volunteering in supervisory positions in small businesses, voluntary and community organisations or small charities within any area of London

Women in the third sector could take advantage of this project to gain a nationally recognised management qualification based on the work they are already doing.

Account3 has not fixed venues yet and will book them where there is most interest, in order to make it as accessible as possible. So if you want you could form a study group with people you know and do the qualification together close to where you live.

The course is free and exam fees, childcare and travel will be provided.

Training - Streetwise Language Live


4 month training & work experience programme
Mid August 2007 – mid December 2007
2 to 3 days per week

An exciting opportunity to participate in a unique programme that will train you in drama workshop and facilitation skills FOR FREE!!

The programme will focus on drama workshops that enhance traditional ESOL (English language learning) training for Refugees and Asylum seekers. As part of this programme you will be involved in developing and learning to use a manual of ‘theatre in language’ workshops.
The training programme is being run by a professional drama therapist and skilled drama facilitator and will include group learning sessions and practical work experience in a variety of English learning centres.
You will need to have performance training/experience and/or English language training/experience.
You will also need to be able to perform as part of a team, work to deadlines, have a good level of English speaking, reading and writing skills and have a commitment to equal opportunities.

A contribution to travel and lunch expenses will be provided.

The School for Social Entrepreneurs supports individuals - social entrepreneurs - who strive to improve people's lives and affect change in their communities. We are running this event for people to sample SSE's approach and to provide leadership skills training for social and community entrepreneurs.

During this training you will hear from social entrepreneur you will learn about the characteristics that make social entrepreneurs successful. You will also learn about social enterprise, and how this relates to other types of social organisations such as charities. SSE works with a diverse range ofindividuals and organisations. They particularly welcome people to this event from black and minority ethnic groups. This training is specifically tailored to individuals working directly for the benefit of their communities rather than second tier organisations.

Resources - Workforce Reforms across the Further Education/Learning & Skills Sector
 


The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) has issued new regulations that will affect practitioners across the learning and skills sector, including VCS providers.

One of the specific changes that will come into force on 1 September is a requirement for all teachers, tutors, trainers and lecturers to fulfil at least 30 hours of continuing professional development each year, with reduced amounts for part-time teachers.

Resources - 'Safer Learning, Safer Practice: A whole organisation approach to safeguarding vulnerable adults for the learning and skills sector'
 


The guide sets out the safeguarding responsibilities of further education colleges, adult and community learning providers and providers of work-based training in the learning and skills sector in England. It recommends creating a 'safer' learning environment that promotes well-being and security for all, promoting fully inclusive and 'safer' practices that apply to all staff and learners, as well as to those legally identified as vulnerable.

Funding - Comic Relief grants


Deadline for expressions of interest: 10 August 2007

Comic Relief vision is to help to create a just world free from poverty and their grant-making aims are to:

• reach people in great need
• meet people's needs and ambitions, and promote their rights
• help people to live with dignity and free from fear
• tackle some of the root causes of poverty and injustice
• bring about lasting improvements in the lives of poor and disadvantaged people


They support voluntary groups and organisations throughout the UK. These are usually registered charities but we also fund some constituted groups with a written set of rules with charitable objectives. They make grants in six programme areas. You can make only one application to one programme. You can make an application under the main grants scheme under the following criteria: Young People, Older People, Mental Health, Refugees and Asylum Seekers, Domestic Violence.

There will be four grant-making cycles for 2007-2008:
Cycle 1 8 June 2007
Cycle 2 12 October 2007
Cycle 3 28 February 2008
Cycle 4 15 August 2008

Funding - Clore Performing Arts Awards


Next deadline: 12 September 2007

The Clore Performing Arts Awards (previously the Small Grants Programme) funds performing arts education initiatives aimed at children and young people (aged 0-18) across the UK. The Awards will be worth a total of £1 million to the sector over a five-year period from 2005 to 2010.
The Clore Duffield Foundation has launched these Awards with the chief aim of providing children and young people with opportunities to experience performing arts education at its best.

The Awards will fund project costs ranging from £1,000 to £10,000

Funding - TalkTalk Innovation in the Community Awards

This award programme encourages groups to use the Internet to connect, support and inspire. The TalkTalk innovation in the Community Awards 2007 are open to community groups and registered charities in the UK that are seeking funding for new and existing Internet projects.

Many UK charities and community groups have recognised the power of the Internet for giving much needed support, from chat rooms on health issues to web-based support networks. Broadband, mobile and other digital technologies are helping to provide essential lifelines. TalkTalk and Citizens Online have teamed up to help UK charities and community groups harness the power of the web. Thirty projects will benefit from £2,000 each, plus a year’s free subscription to TalkTalk.

Manor Gardens Advocacy Project delivers an innovative refugee training and volunteering programme in interpreting and bilingual advocacy and provides a service to newly arrived communities accessing primary health care in Camden and Islington.

You will be responsible for the smooth running of our interpreting and advocacy service including volunteer coordination & support, liaising with GP surgeries and ensuring the service is delivered to a high standard. You will also take a lead role in developing our newly launched pilot enhanced advocacy service for vulnerable service users.

Applicants need to be enthusiastic and able to motivate and support volunteers. You will be well organised, have excellent communication, IT and admin skills, and enjoy a demanding and varied workload. You will have experience of working with volunteers and a keen interest and awareness of advocacy, interpreting and refugee issues.
