MODA News - MODA successes good news for all London voluntary sector
 


This is a year of success and progress for MODA and consequently for hundreds of community organisations benefiting from its services and programmes.

Quality Support Project
Big Lottery Fund have agreed to transfer the funds to MODA to continue the project after our partner organisation went into administration in April. This is good news for more than 50 community groups that have been receiving training and technical support from the project. Our full time officers Victor and Suj will restart their full engagement with the groups from August 2007. We will also be recruiting new benificiaries. The project aims to build up quality systems, policies and procedures of the beneficiary organisations to meet the standards of obtaining Quality Mark or PQASSO. Outreach Capacity Building Support Project
The City Bridge Trust has agreed to fund this project for the next three years. The target is to provide 1-2-1 targeted technical support to up to 30 small charities every year to build up their governance and operational structures, increase their planning know-how and increase their access to resources and funding through offering them 1-2-1 advice and practical help. Events - London Enriched: Mayor draft strategy for refugee integration in the capital

The Mayor’s draft strategy for refugee integration in London – London Enriched – outlines a range of recommended action to tackle the disadvantage faced by London’s refugees, so that they may settle and integrate successfully in London. It focuses on action needed in the areas of housing; employment training and enterprise; health; community safety; refugee children and young people; and community development.

If you are an organisation, service or refugee based in Barnet, Enfield, Haringey, Islington or Waltham Forest this is your chance to come to a public consultation meeting and respond to the Mayor's new refugee integration strategy during its draft consultation period.

Events - An Unsettled Future? Forced Migration and Refugee Studies in the 21st Century
 


7–8 December 2007, University of Oxford


This year the Refugee Studies Centre (RSC) at the University of Oxford celebrates 25 years of pioneering research in the field of refugee and forced migration studies. In December 2007, as the culmination of its anniversary, the RSC will hold a two-day international conference dedicated to bringing scholars together to take stock of the state of
research on refugee and forced migration movements. The conference will consider, in particular, how refugee and forced migration studies have progressed in the years since the RSC’s inception and what contemporary challenges and future directions should inform the ongoing development of these areas of study. The first day of the conference will be dedicated to /Conceptualising the Fields/ of forced migration and refugee studies. The second day of the conference will consider /Key Future Research Areas/ in refugee and forced migration studies for the
coming years.

Events - Trafalgar Square Festival
 


This year’s Festival programme sets out to express London’s creative connections with India through new collaborations and pioneering outdoor commissions from London based and Indian companies.

  • a stunning collaboration between leading installation artist Naresh Kapuria, working with London-based Kathak dancers and the Belgian Theater Tol featuring hundreds of Indian bells and entrancing performers suspended from a crane
  • a new outdoor performance from Tara Arts, who will create a powerful theatrical ritual celebrating the relationship between London and Delhi;

Events - Refugee Therapy Centre Open Afternoon

This will be another opportunity for staff and volunteers from Refugee Community Organisations, as well as other professionals working with refugees, to visit the Centre. You can learn more about our work and the services we are providing, and have your questions answered about how to refer clients.

There will also be a chance to get involved with the Refugee Community Representatives Steering Committee, which advises the Centre’s work.

Training - Praxis: English for Care Course


Starting in July and September, 15 hours per week

Who is eligible?

  • Refugees and EU Accession Country Migrants are given priority.
  • You must be eligible to work in this country.
  • The course is suitable for adults whose first language is not English.
  • You must be able to read, write, understand and speak English at Entry Level 3 or Level 1 (intermediate level).
  • We cannot accept beginners in English on this course.
  • You must live in the Greater London area.

    Aims of the course:
    • Complete Skills for Life ESOL qualifications in all 4 skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing
    • Improve your spoken and written English language skills
    • Be more aware of the employment opportunities in the care sector
    • Be more confident to apply for jobs and /or further training

Training - HACT: Free refugee housing training


Six days, every Thursday from 18 October to 22 November.
Focus group to discuss course contents on the afternoon of the 4 or 5 September.

If you give refugees housing information and/or signposting, or work as a volunteer at an organisation working with refugees, then this course is for you. The free six-day training course will:

  • provide basic and up-to-date knowledge on refugees’ housing and an overview of welfare entitlements;
  • enable participants to signpost and network more effectively;
  • highlight examples of good practice in housing and advice.

Refugee community representatives and housing staff/volunteers working in Tower Hamlets, Hackney and Newham. Approximately 25% of places are available for mainstream voluntary and community organisations, housing associations and local authorities. The training course is run by hact (Housing Associations’ Charitable Trust), in partnership with housing and refugee sector stakeholders.

Training - Streetwise Language Live


4 month training & work experience programme
Mid August 2007 – mid December 2007
2 to 3 days per week

An exciting opportunity to participate in a unique programme that will train you in drama workshop and facilitation skills FOR FREE!!

The programme will focus on drama workshops that enhance traditional ESOL (English language learning) training for Refugees and Asylum seekers. As part of this programme you will be involved in developing and learning to use a manual of ‘theatre in language’ workshops.
The training programme is being run by a professional drama therapist and skilled drama facilitator and will include group learning sessions and practical work experience in a variety of English learning centres.
You will need to have performance training/experience and/or English language training/experience.
You will also need to be able to perform as part of a team, work to deadlines, have a good level of English speaking, reading and writing skills and have a commitment to equal opportunities.

A contribution to travel and lunch expenses will be provided.

Would you like to hear from people who have been there and done it?
Would you benefit from a day of leadership training to learn about social entrepreneurship and social enterprise?
If so, then this training could be for you. The School for Social Entrepreneurs supports individuals - social entrepreneurs - who strive to improve people's lives and affect change in their communities. We are running this event for people to sample SSE's approach and to provide leadership skills training for social and community entrepreneurs.

During this training you will hear from social entrepreneur you will learn about the characteristics that make social entrepreneurs successful. You will also learn about social enterprise, and how this relates to other types of social organisations such as charities. SSE works with a diverse range ofindividuals and organisations. They particularly welcome people to this event from black and minority ethnic groups. This training is specifically tailored to individuals working directly for the benefit of their communities rather than second tier organisations.

Campaign - Scarman Trsut: Help Save the Community Champions
 


The Scarman Trust is a national charity committed to helping citizens bring about change in their community, in the way that they want. The Scarman Trust has recently been told that the Community Champions programme will end in March 2008, and at the moment the Government Department for Education have no plans to replace it.

The loss of this programme will be significant and in particular will be felt by communities already exposed to significant disadvantage. Scarman Trus would ask you to join them in lobbying for the continuation of this fund, by writing to your MP and outlining the benefits of the fund. You can find out who your MP is through the internet by logging onto www.writetothem.com and entering your postcode. Campaign - Queen's Award for Voluntary Service

The Queen's Award is a UK National Honour (equivalent to an MBE) launched to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee in 2002 and will be awarded to outstanding voluntary organisations nominated by their local community. The nomination period for the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service has begun and we urge you to nominate your chosen voluntary organisation for this year's Awards round.

Funding - London Councils' final phase of funding is now open for applications


Deadline for expressions of interest: 5 September 2007

The final phase of London Councils’ commissioning timetable is open for voluntary organisations to deliver across London on a wide range of services from promoting tourism to preventing youth homelessness to providing legal advice. In total 30 services are open in this final phase which has been named Phase 3/4 as it brings the previously known phases 3 and 4 into a single final phase with the same application window.

London Councils particularly welcomes organisations serving the residents of outer London to fill existing gaps in provision. Organisations that applied under Phases 1 and 2, and now intending also to apply under Phase 3/4, are also advised to revisit the application guidance as there have been amendments to the application process.

London Councils strongly welcomes applications from organisations that have not been funded by them previously. The service specifications are divided into two groups according to the application method:Single stage applications; Two stage applications

Funding - Preventing Violent Extremism Community Leadership Fund


Next deadline: 12 September 2007

Preventing Violent Extremism Community Leadership Fund is a grants programme to build the capacity of Muslim communities to take practical steps to reject violent extremism and feel a welcome part of wider British society. The fund will focus on three strands:

  • Leadership Capacity - building the capacity of today and tomorrow’s leaders in the Muslim community, to enable them to help the community to resist the influence of violent extremists and promote a positive and engaged citizenship.
  • Organisational Capacity - building the capacity of organisations in the Muslim community to actively resist the influence of violent extremists.
  • Capacity of Muslim Women - unlocking the potential of Muslim women in tackling violent extremism, enabling their voices to be heard and empowering them to engage with young Muslims at risk of being targeted by violent extremists.

The grants programme will support projects with a national impact - either a wide geographic impact or, exceptionally, ‘trailblazing’ projects that will provide ideas / information which can form the basis of national best practice. A priority will be to build on good practice and lessons learnt from the wider voluntary and community sector, including activities of individuals/ organisations of other faiths or none.

Funding - TalkTalk Innovation in the Community Awards

This award programme encourages groups to use the Internet to connect, support and inspire. The TalkTalk innovation in the Community Awards 2007 are open to community groups and registered charities in the UK that are seeking funding for new and existing Internet projects.

Many UK charities and community groups have recognised the power of the Internet for giving much needed support, from chat rooms on health issues to web-based support networks. Broadband, mobile and other digital technologies are helping to provide essential lifelines. TalkTalk and Citizens Online have teamed up to help UK charities and community groups harness the power of the web. Thirty projects will benefit from £2,000 each, plus a year’s free subscription to TalkTalk.

Islington Voluntary Action Council (IVAC) is recruiting to 4 posts as part of our new Policy and Partnerships team, which aims to transform the role of the third sector in local partnerships.

Islington is diverse, with some of the country’s worst deprivation alongside considerable wealth. We are particularly concerned to champion the interests of those who are socially excluded.

  • The Head of Policy, Partnerships and Communications will develop and manage this new team working with local partnerships and networks so that the third sector is effectively represented and achieving positive change (Salary £35,589 per annum; Hours: 35 per week)
  • The Policy and Research Officer will work with third sector organisations to undertake research projects that will inform community representatives to local partnerships (Salary: £29,289 pro rata Hours: 17.5 per week)
  • The Islington Compact Co-ordinator will develop the Compact between the third sector and statutory partners. (Salary: £29,289 pro rata Hours: 17.5 per week)
  • The Communications Officer will ensure that IVAC communicates effectively with the third sector, making the most effective use of our database and website. (Salary: £28,539 pro rata Hours: 17.5 per week)

The Bosnia and Herzegovina Community Advice Centre Brent (BHCACB) is an independent charity organisation offering free advice and practical help particularly to elderly and disabled group of people from Bosnia and Herzegovina needing assistance in the UK.

Several agencies both from statutory and voluntary sector described Bosnia and Herzegovina Community Advice Centre Brent as a “ good example for good practice” providing Bosnian refugees with the very best outcomes and opportunities, hence we are funded by the City Bridge Trust to establish and deliver the project for all Bosnian elderly refugees living in greater London.

We are seeking an enthusiastic person with sound experience in service delivery to build upon our achievements and drive forward innovative services that provide Elderly Bosnian refugees with support.

You will be part of the team of Bosnian Elderly Project and take responsibility for development and implementation of the project’s aims and objectives.
