MODA News - MODA successes good news for all London voluntary sector

This is a year of success and progress for MODA and consequently for hundreds of community organisations benefiting from its services and programmes.

Quality Support Project
Big Lottery Fund have agreed to transfer the funds to MODA to continue the project after our partner organisation went into administration in April. This is good news for more than 50 community groups that have been receiving training and technical support from the project. Our full time officers Victor and Suj will restart their full engagement with the groups from August 2007. We will also be recruiting new benificiaries. The project aims to build up quality systems, policies and procedures of the beneficiary organisations to meet the standards of obtaining Quality Mark or PQASSO. If you are interested please fill in the online application form. (Click here)

Outreach Capacity Building Support Project
The City Bridge Trust has agreed to fund this project for the next three years. The target is to provide 1-2-1 targeted technical support to up to 30 small charities every year to build up their governance and operational structures, increase their planning know-how and increase their access to resources and funding through offering them 1-2-1 advice and practical help. We will start recruiting new beneficiaries in August. If you wish to be considered for support please fill in the online form: Outreach Capacity Building Support. (Click here)

Events - 'Refusal Factory'

‘'Women’s experiences of the detained fast track asylum process at Yarl’s Wood IRC'
Launch of new research by Bail for Immigration Detainees & discussion about fast track

Thursday 6 September 2007, 6.30-8.00pm
Lecture Hall, Toynbee Hall, 28 Commercial St, London E1 6LS (nearest tube Aldgate East)

Since May 2005, women who claim asylum in the UK can be detained at Yarl’s Wood Immigration removal centre for their cases to be ‘fast tracked’. They are expected to disclose their experiences, and prepare for their asylum interview and any appeals within a matter of days. Many do not have legal representation at their appeals. Women who have fled rape and torture are detained and most are turned down for asylum – only about one per cent of women win their case at initial decision in Yarl’s Wood, and only two per cent are successful at appeal.
" Refusal factory: Women’s experiences of the detained fast track asylum process at Yarl’s Wood" a new report by Bail for Immigration Detainees (BID) presents evidence from BID’s casework, interviews with women who have been detained, from court observations of fast track asylum appeals at Yarl’s Wood, and information from legal representatives and detainee support organisations. It concludes that detained fast track undermines the right to seek asylum by stacking the odds against women.
In addition to launching BID’s research, this meeting will provide an opportunity to hear from women who have been detained in fast track. There will be time for questions and discussion with panel members, including lawyers and organisations working with detained women.
Chair: Alison Stanley, Bindman and Partners; Speakers: Sarah Cutler, Bail for Immigration Detainees Women who have been detained Lisa Amin, Lawrence Lupin Solicitors Women Against Rape/Black Women’s Rape Action Project Steve Symonds, Immigration Law Practitioners’ Association.
