Events - Citizenship and Community Engagement Conference

Stimulating Cohesion and Overcoming Barriers to Integration
Wednesday 17th October 2007 - Central London

Chaired by: Sidney Shipton OBE, Coordinator, Three Faiths Forum
Speakers include: Hamza Vayani (Commissioner, Commission on Integration and Cohesion);· Harmander Singh (Principal Advisor, Sikhs In England), Tim Parsons (Head of Diversity, City of London Police), Debbie Ladds (Director, Projects, Community Development Foundation), Maxine Moar (Community Participation Coordinator, Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council), Gillian Douglas (Manager, Equalities and Social Inclusion, Bristol City Council), Pete Pattison (National Subject Lead, Association for Citizenship Teaching), Suhel Miah (Project Manager, HAAYA), Mandeep Kaur Sira (Project Officer, AIK SAATH).

The report ‘Our Shared Future’, published by the Commission on Integration and Cohesion in June 2007, highlighted key issues requiring positive action in promoting integration, community engagement and cohesion. This timely conference will focus on how local authorities, the police, schools, youth groups, faith organizations and community leaders can work together in partnership to ensure that policy and action combine effectively to tackle extremism and strengthen ties across cultural barriers. A strong emphasis on Citizenship teaching in schools of all faiths and ages, the Connecting Communities Plus grant scheme and Faith Communities Capacity Building Fund, are examples of fresh initiatives aimed at stimulating cohesion and overcoming barriers to integration. Different regions of the UK have unique and particular issues, yet all are working together to implement a nationwide strategy. Attend this conference to hear from key speakers and organisations sharing fresh ideas and best practice. Benefit from the opportunity to network with colleagues from across the public sector responsible for building cohesive communities.
