Events - Building strong local communities: delivering community cohesion in London

16 October 2007; Clothworkers’ Hall, London EC3

This London Councils conference takes place against a backdrop of a national debate about identity, integration and the increasing diversity of our communities. As the recent report by the Commission on Integration and Cohesion made clear, we remain a generally cohesive society with the overwhelming majority of people, of all races, faiths and nationalities, getting on well. But the report also made clear that the biggest influence on people’s perception is what is happening in their local area.
As one of the most diverse cities in the world, London is an example of the economic and cultural benefits diversity can bring; but it is also prone to the tensions that can arise within and between communities in a rapidly changing world. The conference will examine how London councils and their voluntary sector partners can help build strong, cohesive communities across the capital. It is aimed at elected members, senior borough officers and decision makers from public, commercial and voluntary sector organisations.

Keynote Speakers: Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London; Phil Hope MP, Minister for the Third Sector, Cabinet Office; Sir Ronald Cohen, Chairman, Commission on Unclaimed Assets and Chairman, Social Investment Task Force; Charlie Mayfield, Chair, John Lewis Partnership.

Calls - Consultation on the Mayor's Health Inequalities Strategy

The Mayor is asking for responses to his paper "Reducing health inequalities — issues for London and priorities for action" by 19 September. The consultation will feed into the development of a draft Health Inequalities Strategy for London, which is due to be available for formal public consultation at the end of this year.

Health inequalities are differences in health between different sections of the population, which are not the result of biology but are determined by behaviour or circumstance. They are the result of social, economic and environmental conditions such as employment status, income, education, social networks and housing.

For a briefing on the Health Inequalities Strategy for London, including guidance on how to respond to the consultation, go to the LVSC website (click here). LVSC will be submitting a coordinated response: to contribute email your concerns, case studies and evidence to policy@lvsc.org.uk by Friday 14 September.

London Councils has decided to extend the deadline for the submission of applications for single stage services to noon on Friday 21 September 2007. This decision has been made in recognition of the work involved for voluntary organisations in completing the single stage proposal form over the holiday period and will give groups more than 8 weeks to complete their applications.

This change only affects the deadline for single stage applications and not that of two stage applications, which has now passed. For further information click here.

Funding - Community Assets

The £30 million Community Assets programme, funded by the Office of the Third Sector and delivered by the Big Lottery Fund, is a programme to enable third sector organisations to have greater control over the assets they use, such as community buildings. It will facilitate the transfer of genuine assets from local authorities to third sector organisations for their use as community resources. The programme will offer grants of between £150,000 and £1 million for refurbishment of local authority buildings, including community centres and other multi-purpose facilities, so they can benefit both local communities and the third sector organisations that take them on.

The Big Lottery Fund is holding regional seminars in each of its nine England regions between 4 and 14 September (click here for the list of dates). The seminars, attended by local authorities and their third sector partners, will focus on explaining the aims of the programme and the application process.
