Events - Addressing Inequalities in Education

Empowering BME communities to assert their rights - A public seminar
Thursday 6th December 2007, 10am – 3pm,
Paul Robeson Theatre, CentreSpace, Treaty Centre, High Street, Hounslow, TW3 1ES

Research shows fewer young Asian women (Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi) compared to Asian males participate in higher education. At the same time young Asian women who do participate in higher education (including primary and secondary) are not passively accepting the racial, violent and sexual harassment which are a daily part of their ‘educational’ life. Experiences of Black youth in the education system is framed in the language of ‘alienation, isolation, exclusion or integration’ while the education curriculum excludes the experiences of black students, the racism of educational resources, and the racist and sexist culture in educational bodies goes unchallenged. As the number of students being excluded and the racist incidents in schools continues to rise, the focus for action has to be on opening up discussion and opposing the reactionary institutions and individuals promoting racist and sexist ideas, practices and policies. This seminar provides a unique chance to reflect on what role education plays for Black students and plans for action.

The seminar is organised by London Development Education Centre, Azad London (The Asian Health Agency) and CEN (Communities Empowerment Network). For more details and booking information call Azad on 020 8538 7703 or email: londec@hotmail.com.

Events - Older Refugees - From Isolation to Integration

Wednesday 9th January 2008 at City Hall, London

Not enough is known about the needs of older refugees and how intersecting factors, such as age, migration status, gender and ethnicity impact on people’s lives, and how these can best be taken into account when devising services and policies. Older refugees are often particularly vulnerable as they are seldom recognised as having specific needs or for the contributions that they can make to the wider society. They become isolated as a result of their refugee status and because there are fewer engagement opportunities open to older people.
This ground breaking conference will be the culmination of the Older Refugees Programme - a 2-year partnership initiative, funded by Lloyds TSB, between Age Concern England, the Refugee Council, Age Concern London and the Greater London Association of Older Women (AGLOW), focusing on the issues, challenges and service needs of older refugees and asylum-seekers.
The conference, kindly hosted by the Greater London Authority and free to attend, will present the findings and key messages from the programme. It is aimed at an audience of service providers and policy makers responsible for addressing the needs of older refugees and asylum-seekers. The day will be a unique opportunity to explore how existing and potential initiatives can help to reduce the isolation experienced by many older refugees and promote their integration in to the local community and wider society.

This is an opportunity not to be missed if you have an interest at national or regional level in improving dignity, security and opportunity for older refugees. To register your interest in attending this conference please email refugees@ace.org.uk or call 020 8765 7523.

Resources - Why women-only?

The value and benefits of by women, for women services

Women's Resource Centre moves into the second phase of its why women? campaign with the launch of our new report entitled "Why women-only? The value and benefits of by women, for women services". The report aims to answer the question asked increasingly of many women’s organisations by funders and the public: "Why are you women-only?". This timely report sets out why women-only services are still relevant and much in demand, despite a common misconception that they are no longer needed because we have achieved women’s equality.
