Events - GHARWEG - Two Models Of Development: Some Reflections on Development Processes in Ghana and Venezuela

Saturday, 8 December 2007 at 3.30 pm;
GHARWEG, 5 Westminster Bridge Road , London SE1 7XW

This is a panel discussion on the economic development processes of Ghana and Venezuela. Speakers will shed light on how the two governments are engaged in the development process and which model will ensure that by the year 2015, Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) set up by the United Nations, will be met.

Ghana is seen as the most peaceful country in West Africa. Many West Africans consider the political stability of Ghana as helping the development process. Unlike the Kwame Nkrumah era, where Ghana spearheaded the liberation struggle and pursued economic independence and of development, the Jerry Rawlings dictatorship and the current Kufour government has firmly put Ghana within the orbit of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.

Venezuela on the other hand has opted for self-development and is fiercely anti-imperialist. Under the leadership of President Hugo Chavez, Venezuela is pursuing a different model of development – not dictated by the IMF/and World Bank.

The meeting is to bring together people who are involved in the development processes in Ghana and Venezuela to discuss these models.

To book a place on the seminar please all 0207- 620 1430 or email gharweg@aol.com

Events - Addressing Inequalities in Education

Thursday 6th December 2007; 10am – 3pm
Paul Robeson Theatre CentreSpace, Treaty Centre High Street, Hounslow, Middlesex TW3 1ES

Research shows fewer young Asian women (Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi) compared to Asian males participate in higher education. At the same time young Asian women who do participate in higher education (including primary and secondary) are not passively accepting the racial, violent and sexual harassment which are a daily part of their ‘educational’ life.

Experiences of Black youth in the education system is framed in the language of ‘alienation, isolation, exclusion or integration’ while the education curriculum excludes the experiences of black students, the racism of educational resources, and the racist and sexist culture in educational bodies goes unchallenged.

As the number of students being excluded and the racist incidents in schools continues to rise, the focus for action has to be on opening up discussion and opposing the reactionary institutions and individuals promoting racist and sexist ideas, practices and policies. This seminar provides a unique chance to reflect on what role education plays for Black students and plans for action.

Who is the seminar for?
Teachers, Community Workers, Youth groups and Youth workers including young women’s groups, Anti racist organisations, Statutory and Voluntary bodies committed to meeting the needs of Black youth. Organisations responsible for putting into practice education policies and delivering education and youth services, groups and organisations supporting Black families.

Call - Refugee Council: tender for the provision of Refugee Integration & Employment Services in London

The Refugee Council has been invited by the Border and Immigration Agency to tender for the provision of Refugee Integration and Employment Services in London, the East of England and the West Midlands.

There is limited information on what this new integration service will look like but we know that it will have three strands: general integration advice for the first six months, employment advice between the second and twelfth month, and mentoring. We also know that paid employment for refugees is going to be an important indicator of integration and success of the service.

We will want to deliver some of the services ourselves but we also want to subcontract much of the service to other agencies and particularly to organisations that have good links with refugee communities.

The Refugee Council is keen to follow an open, transparent and competitive process in order to select the organisations that will work with us . Organisations interested in working with the Refugee Council to deliver this new service should visit the Refugee Council Website at www.refugeecouncil.org.uk/integrationtender

All queries regarding this process should be directed to Grant.Morton@Refugeecouncil.org.uk
