Events - Older Refugees - From Isolation to Integration

9 January 2008, 10am, City Hall, London

This ground breaking conference will be the culmination of the Older Refugees Programme focusing on the issues, challenges and service needs of older refugees and asylum-seekers.
The Older Refugees Programme is a 2-year partnership initiative, funded by Lloyds TSB, between Age Concern England, the Refugee Council, Age Concern London and the Greater London Association of Older Women (AGLOW).

Older refugees are often particularly vulnerable as they are seldom recognised as having specific needs or for the contributions that they can make to the wider society. They become isolated as a result of their refugee status and because there are fewer engagement opportunities open to older people. The conference is aimed at an audience of service providers and policy makers responsible for addressing the needs of older refugees and asylum-seekers. The day will be a unique opportunity to explore how existing and potential initiatives can help to reduce the isolation experienced by many older refugees and promote their integration in to the local community and wider society.

Events - Leadership in a Charity

Wednesday 30 January 2008, 6pm
Cass Business School, 106 Bunhill Row, London EC1Y 8TZ

Leadership in non-profits can be tough! Because charities are strongly cause related, many staff have high commitment, strong views and want to participate in decision making. How do you gain the benefit of this participation without slowing down decision making unnacceptably? How do you take urgent decisions fast without losing staff enthusiasm? How do you persuade Trustees who feel acutely the legal responsibility for final decision making, to accept staff inputs? Shami Chakrabarti, elected by her peers as 2006’s most admired CEO will talk about her views on these and other leadership issues. Speaker: Shami Chakrabarti, Director, Liberty

This is one of a series of Charity Talks organised by the Centre for Charity Effectiveness. Cost: £20 For more information, and to book a place, click here.

Events - Improving the quality of community empowerment

18th December 2007, 1.30 – 4.30pm
Holloway Road Resource Centre, London N7.

Under recent government policy, community involvement takes centre stage – in the words of Rt Hon Hazel Blears MP, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, public involvement is now the rule, not the exception. But how can we ensure that the many community empowerment activities underway and planned achieve what they set out to?
The National Empowerment Partnership programme aims to improve the quality, coordination and evidence of community empowerment. One of the key features of the NEP programme in London is to produce an Involvement Map of community empowerment and engagement mechanisms, such as participatory budgeting, citizen’s panels, residents’ focus groups, and petitions. Our initial focus is on gathering examples of mechanisms targeting young people and refugees and asylum seekers, later we will broaden our research to other groups.

The London Civic Forum, as lead partner in the National Empowerment Partnership in London is holding a half day participatory event at which you can find out more and contribute to improving the quality of community empowerment mechanisms in London.
Who should attend? This event will be of particular interest to frontline organisations, community engagement practitioners and local authority and statutory sector officers with direct responsibility for community empowerment. If you meet this criteria then come and share your views and experiences on what does or does not work well with these communities. Travel and childcare expenses can be refunded for volunteers and unpaid workers.

Training - Skills gaps, training and development workshop

January 22nd, 2-6pm ; NCVO. Regent’s Wharf, 8 All Saints Street, London, N1 9RL.

Would you appreciate chance to: discover the results of research into voluntary sector skills gaps and training needs? ; share your knowledge and experience with others to feed into the final report? ; influence policy recommendations to be pitched to government?
In October this year the UK Workforce Hub and NCVO launched the Voluntary Sector Skills Survey 2007. This research highlighted a number of skills needs within the voluntary sector and identified recommendations for policy and practice. We have recently conducted a number of focus groups with front-line organisations to further explore some of these issues. We are inviting those of you who work in CVS or voluntary sector infrastructure organisations to attend a workshop where you will have an opportunity to hear the early findings of this research and to share your experiences and knowledge of skills gaps and training needs within the voluntary sector.

This workshop will allow us to ensure our findings and future policy and practice recommendations are informed by the knowledge and experiences of a wide range of voluntary organisations. Your input will feed directly into our final report and influence any policy recommendations to government.

If you are interested in attending, or would like further information, please contact our research assistant John Gardiner at john.gardiner@ukworkforcehub.org.uk or on 020 7520 2437.

Resources - Britain's Immigrants: an economic profile

This IPPR report has been produced to form the empirical basis of an episode of Channel 4’s Dispatches series on the economic characteristics of Britain’s immigrant communities and the contributions they make to the country.
This report attempts to contribute fresh information about the characteristics and contribution of some of the UK’s largest immigrant communities. It presents data on a range of indicators of the socio-economic characteristics of 25 groups of people defined by their country of birth (which we refer to as ‘country-of-birth groups’) living in the UK, plus those of the UK-born as a comparator. The report also explores and outlines some of the factors that shape these socioeconomic outcomes and highlights trends over time. While a complete picture cannot be drawn because of the lack of comprehensive data, we believe this report uses the best available evidence from the best available sources to present a picture of how Britain’s immigrant communities compare with each other and compare with the UK-born population across several key economic criteria.

Resources - Zimbabwean asylum cases

This Refugee Council briefing provides information about the situation of Zimbabwean asylum seekers who think they may be affected by Asylum and Immigration Tribunal judgment published on 21st November 2007. This ruling by the Asylum and Immigration Tribunal, in favour of the Secretary of State for the Home Department, overturns the decision in 2005 that all Zimbabwean asylum seekers face a risk of persecution in Zimbabwe if they were to be forced to return.
This is an updated version of briefings published in August 2006, September 2006 and April 2007.
