Events - Participation of Migrants: Counselling - Education - Further Education

31 January & 29 February 2008,
Lothian Chambers, George IV Bridge, Edinburgh

A European funded project developing research and tools for working educationally with migrants in a number of different countries, has gone one stage further, and migrants in Germany, Lithuania, Barcelona Spain, and here at the Welcoming project in Edinburgh have been evaluating these tools.

Adult Learning Project (ALP) invite you to meet firstly with the Edinburgh team on 31st of January, and then to meet the other European partners on Feb 28/29th. This will be a great opportunity to find out what is happening in migrant education across Europe, how people are welcomed, how they have a say, and how they fare in higher education. In dialogue ALP will share experience, good practice and useful tools. I do hope you will come to one, or preferable both of these events. This is a unique opportunity for migrants to be heard, and for organisations to develop effective, meaningful and respectful educational and support services. ALP are filming in all the countries and will make a DVD to share methods and wisdoms.

Events - Conflict Transformation For Refugee & Diaspora Communities

January 25-26,
London Metropolitan University, Department of Applied Social Sciences

This short course will address how diaspora communities can be involved in peacebuilding activities in their countries of origin or countries of exile. The participants will be women and men, mainly employed by refugee community organisations in London. This particular two-day unit will link the experience in the refugee communities to the conflicts (frequently violent) in the recent past or present in their countries of origin.

We will introduce tools of conflict analysis and major theories of conflict management and transformation practice that provide a rationale for interventions. We will identify suitable entry points for intervention or response to conflicts, and different kinds of non-violent action: mediative activities from within communities, negotiation, and dialogue, including non-verbal interactions such as use of art, photography and drama. We will look at post-settlement and transition interventions.

The actual social and political context faced by participants will provide much of the material to be drawn on. The approach to learning will be practical, participative and experience-based. The insights, existing skills and life-wisdom of participants will be integral to the process. A criterion for evaluating the course will be: are participants and their organisations better equipped to make a difference after the course?

Costs:
The course has been largely funded by a Charitable Trust. and John Eversley’s time is paid for by London Metroplitan University. There will be a fee of £10 per day to cover the cost of refreshments.

To participate please email John Eversley at ppre@onetel.com as soon as possible

Calls - Council for Assisting Refugee Academics (CARA): Call for papers

In Defence of Learning: The Past and the Present

2008 marks the 75th anniversary of an organisation originally established as the Academic Assistance Council (AAC, 1933) and then the Society for the Protection of Science and Learning (SPSL, 1936), to save scientists and scholars in Europe from the onslaught of Nazism. After 1945, the work of the SPSL (renamed the Council for Assisting Refugee Academics (CARA) in 1999) continued; its records chart the geography and chronology of oppressive regimes, as independent thinkers so often bear the brunt of human rights abuses.

To mark this anniversary a two-day conference will take place at The Royal Society, 6-9 Carlton Terrace, London, from 3rd - 5th December 2008. This conference is being held so that those with a significant interest in specific refugee academics, and those with major interest in the importance of assisting refugee academics in the contemporary world, can come together for a discussion and review. The conference will include a wide range of speakers detailing the lives and contributions of individual refugee academics, both past and present, as well as highlighting the work of organisations and foundations that assisted them. The conference is open to academics and organisations who have a significant research interest in the field of refugee academics and representatives from the refugee community in the UK.

To launch the anniversary year, Albie Sachs; Justice in the Constitutional Court of South Africa and former CARA grantee, is speaking at University College London (UCL) on 23rd January 2008, at 6.30pm.
