Events - PRAXIS: General Grounds for Refusal

Saturday 17 May 2008; 1.00 pm
Praxis Community Projects, Pott Street, London E2 0EF
(Public Transport: Five minutes walk from Bethnal Green station on Central Line. Also accessible by following buses - 8, 106, 253, 254, 309, 388, D3, and D6)

Praxis is holding a free event for migrants to inform them about the changes to the immigration rules. These changes could effect new applications to enter or remain in the UK, especially for migrants who are refused asylum seekers, overstayed their visa, have previously left the UK through deportation, removal, or voluntary return, or have other issues around past applications for a visa.

The purpose of the event is to provide information to migrants who may be effected and to minimise the negative effect this law. There will be a presentation about the new rules by Steve Symonds of ILPA. Migrants can also meet with a solicitor to discuss their case and find out of there is any action they should take before 1 October 2008 to help their case. Sessions with solicitors are free.

Events - Culture and 2012: engaging marginalised young people through arts and sport

20 June 2008, 9am - 4pm
Bernie Grant Arts Centre, Tottenham Green, London N15 4RX

Arts and sport, cultural and recreational activity, can contribute to neighbourhood renewal and make a real difference to health, crime, employment and education in deprived communities. This timely conference will debate and explore how arts and sport are used to engage disadvantaged young people, addressing themes like:

  • Social responsibility (for example, fear, safety, knife/gun crime)
  • Citizenship, healthy living (gang culture, STDs)
  • Skills and training (self-confidence, employability)
  • Worklessness (benefits trap)
  • Equalities (social exclusion)

It will raise important questions for community and voluntary sector organisations, arts, youth, education, regeneration agencies and statutory bodies: What is the Cultural Olympiad really offering marginalised young people? Where do beneficiaries go at the end of their support? How are they involved in the design of these projects? Can we measure their impact? Where’s the sustainable long-term funding?

For further information and to reserve your place visit North London Arts website.

Calls - REAP Refugees for Equalities Project

REAP is really pleased to have gained some EHRC funding for a one year project called Refugees for Equalities. The idea is to work in West London, addressing the fact that many voluntary organisations struggle to provide access to equalities related services for refugees (eg. counselling for gender violence) because they see people as refugees first and foremost and often don’t fully recognise that refugees are entitled to the same range of equalities support and rights that people born and bred here are entitled too. Also there is low recognition of the ‘multiple equalities’ issues faced by high proportions of refugees, eg. lesbian refugees with mental health issues.

REAP plans to build up a ‘core group’ of 20 refugees called ‘Refugees for Equalities’ plus another 100 with some interest, and undertake trainings, survey work, build up a bank of materials to raise awareness etc.

They are currently trying to identify people who would be willing able and useful on a project steering group.

If you are interested in the project please contact Poornima on poornima@reap.org.uk
