Events - Informal adult learning - have your say!

Consultation events for Learners
10 June 2008, The Abbey Centre, 34 Great Smith Street, London SW1P 3BU C1712L
Fee: Free (includes lunch, tea/coffee)

Why ‘informal’ adult learning?
‘Informal’ adult learning can be any learning people do for pleasure, personal development or for the benefit of their community – rather than for qualifications and work. It includes everyday learning from the TV and radio, learning through volunteering, joining a book club, working an allotment, visiting museums or following a hobby, as well as joining courses.
The Government understands that this learning makes a big contribution to our health and happiness, that it builds skills and interests, inspires us, helps us makes friends and enjoy life, and strengthens families and communities. £210 million of public money is spent on it annually.
The Government has launched a national consultation exercise to gather information for a major policy paper about the future shape of informal adult learning. Learners’ views are at the heart of that consultation. The Government wants to listen, and it particularly wants to hear what learners think.

What is the event for?
The day will be an opportunity for adult learners to have their say about the future of informal adult learning and to think about some of the main questions the Government is asking. These include: What can digital, TV, mobile phone and internet technologies contribute? How do we make sure everyone has fair access to informal learning? What, where and how will people want to learn in the future? How do we make the best use of public money?
The ideas from the two consultation event will be written up and sent to the Government as part of the consultation. They will be submitted as an expression of learners’ views.

Post-EU enlargement migration flows to (and from) the UK

To mark the fourth anniversary of the enlargement of the European Unionin 2004, ippr has undertaken a major study that aims to provide as definitive a picture of post-enlargement migration flows to and from the UK as possible. This report presents fresh evidence on the scale and nature of migration from the eight new Central and Eastern European countries that joined the EU in 2004 and, to a lesser extent, from Romania and Bulgaria, which joined in 2007.
The report is based on new analysis of a range of existing sources of data on migration flows. It also draws on the results of a specially commissioned survey, believed to be the first of its kind, of Poles who have recently returned from the UK to their home country. The report also draws on qualitative interviews with Polish migrants living in the UK.
