Events - Reaching London's Refugees - The role of the Voluntary Sector

10 July, 9.30 - 16.00; NCVO, London

This event will bring together refugees and refugee community organisations with other voluntary and community sector organisations to discuss how all services can work better with refugees.

What the event aims to do: Increase people's confidence in providing services to refugees; Help with signposting to specialist services; Make mainstream services more accessible and available to refugees; Challenge some of the assumptions about working with refugees.
We want to link the work at this event with the recommendations made by the Board of Refugee and Asylum Seeker Integration in London's strategy, "London Enriched".

This event is particularly aimed at mainstream Voluntary and Community Sector organisations who want to improve how they work with refugees, but we are also keen for refugees and members of refugee community organisations to attend to share their experiences and inform the debate.

Events - LSPs – Getting involved: Staying involved

10 July 2008, The Móller Centre, Cambridge.

If you are already involved in a Local Strategic Partnership (LSP), think you ought to be involved or believe LSPs are a waste of time – this conference is for you!

LSPs are the voluntary and community sector’s big opportunity to get involved and have a say on plans and services for your local community. Decisions made by LSPs and local authorities will dictate how all government funding in your area is spent over the next three years and beyond – but if you are not at the table, you can’t have any influence. The day will be a mixture of plenary and breakout sessions, which will actively encourage feedback from delegates on their experiences of LSPs, whether good or bad.

There is no fee for this event and it is open to any voluntary organisation working in the East of England. However, places are limited, so please book now. To Book your Place and for further information contact 01284 729421 or email sue.houlder@eera.gov.uk.

Training - Addaction SMARTScheme

The SMARTScheme (Substance Misuse and Reflective Practitioner Training Scheme) is a professional training programme run by Addaction. It is aimed at all who are seriously interested in working in the substance misuse field in London and particularly welcomes applications from Black Minority Ethnic (BME) and Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) groups.

Training runs for 6 months and work placements for approximately 9 months. Participants need to be able to commit to four full days a week for this period. They will receive on the job work experience and training from workers “at the sharp end” therefore bearing witness to best practice and current trends in the substance misuse field. Participants work towards a Health & Social Care NVQ Level 3 qualification which includes four units from the Drug & Alcohol National Occupational Standards. From here they will be ideally placed to apply for jobs within the substance misuse field or alternatively, they may decide to transfer their skills and qualifications into a related field such as housing or mental health. Most people coming onto the SMART Scheme have no formal qualifications but are full of motivation and want to work in a field that makes a real difference.

Entry on to the SMARTScheme is by application form only. If your application is successful you will be invited to group interviews which run for three days. Amongst other things, we look for people’s ability to work as part of a team, to take on critical feedback, and their awareness of substance misuse issues. Please call 020 7017 2868 or go to www.smartscheme.org.uk to ask about the next dates of recruitment and to get an application pack.

Funding - Calls for Expressions of Interest in the Evaluation of ChangeUp

Capacitybuilders has begun the process of commissioning the evaluation of ChangeUp by calling for Expressions of Interest.

The governments ten year ‘ChangeUp’ programme is managed by Capacitybuilders and aims to build the capacity of support services in the third sector at local, regional and national levels. Government investment for 2004 – 08 was £150m with a further £88.5 m confirmed for 2008 - 11.

The evaluation will focus primarily on the impact ChangeUp has had on support services and the subsequent impact on frontline organizations at local, regional and national levels. We are looking for expressions of interest from people with experience of the third sector, support services, grant making, policy analysis and research experience / academic credentials.
