Events - Exploring Integration: Third Country Migrants in the EU

Seminar, Friday 25th July 10.30 – 16.30
Middlesex University, The Burroughs, Hendon

The Middlesex University Social Policy Research Centre is launching two recent comparative European research projects which explore aspects of the integration and inclusion of non-EU migrants. It will also discuss the broader conceptual and policy issues arising from these projects. Presentations will focus on both the UK situation and recent developments in the EU and include researchers from the projects at Middlesex University as well as external speakers.

The Research Projects

The MITI (Migrant Integration Territorial Index (UK, Italy (lead), France, Spain, Portugal) part of the EU’s INTI programme, critically explored the meaning of integration and the EU agenda of measuring integration in order to develop policy targets. This project reviewed national and EU policy on integration and explored the possibilities of using existing data sets to measure integration.

Civic stratification, gender and family migration policies in Europe (UK, Austria, Spain, France, Czech Republic, Netherlands) examined how immigration legislation affected different kinds of family migrants and their responses to it. It was based on policy analysis and interviews with NGOs, policy makers, academics and individual family migrants.

Events - LSPs – Towards a London Council of Community Champions

Discussion Meetin - Saturday 9 August, 2pm, London

A message from Sandi Rance, Community Champions:

Since the Community Champions and Big Boost programmes ended in March this year the London office has closed and Scarman is now part of the national Novas Scarman group. Community Champions (Years 2000 - 2007) are now looking for a way to keep in touch with each other and grow. To this end we have a discussion meeting arranged for Saturday, 2 pm August 9 at Gharweg, the Multi Resource Centre 5 (5a Westminster Bridge Road, 5 minutes from Waterloo and Elephant and Castle stations). Unfunded, we are asking for a £5 entry fee - towards the hall hire and a 'fighting fund'. Our aim is to set up a Council of Community Champions, a Londonwide network.

I would ask those interested to let me know ASAP by e-mail sandirance@talktalk.net and I will keep them informed.

We want to link the work at this event with the recommendations made by the Board of Refugee and Asylum Seeker Integration in London's strategy, "London Enriched".

Training - Understanding Race Equality in Mental Health Services

Thursday 10th July; 3pm – 4.30pm; City and Hackney Mind, 312, Kingsland Road, E8 4DE
Training by Claudia Anderson - Employment Coach for Team Hackney/East London NHS

Race, Equality and Cultural Competency training programme was devised in order to address cultural differences in society, and to look specifically at inequality and racism in mental health services, focusing on the importance of BME service users and carers involvement in mental health service development in order to provide good practice and improve mental health services for everyone.

As part of the Race Equality and Cultural Competency Programme, the objectives of this training session is to identify themes of institutional discrimination and inequality, to highlight the broader patterns of institutional discrimination in mental health services, and define more clearly what is meant by race equality in services. The session will enable us to discuss ways in which mental health parishioners operate within their own services and highlights models that compare service – led professional approaches to a more holistic approach generated by service users.

UKBA's recent "name and shame" list shows that the majority of businesses fined in May for the employment of undocumented migrants were black and minority ethnic takeaway shops and restaurants. This information supports wider concerns about the negative impact of the new Points Based System on ethnic minority businesses.
