Get Fair is a national coalition that is campaigning to end poverty in the UK. The campaign is calling on all parties to commit to concrete measures to ensure decent, adequate incomes, fair access to services, affordable homes and decent neighbourhoods.

Over the past two decades Britain has become richer - but not any fairer. The UK is the fifth richest country on the planet - yet the gap between rich and poor continues to grow. According to the Government’s own statistics, 12.8 million people in the UK are living in poverty.

Events - The Spitafields Show and Green Fair

The Spitalfields Show & Green Fair combines the Annual Horticultural Show of fruit, vegetables, flowers and home produce with the Green Fair promoting the care and enjoyment of the natural environment.

The Spitalfields Show is a glorious display of home grown produce by people from all over London.

The Green Fair welcomes all kinds of stalls. There will be healthy living and nutritional advice, alternative therapies, information on recycling, composting & growing your own food, biodiversity and sustainability workshops.

Celebrate diversity in the most cosmopolitan city in the world! Love Difference is a Festival of intercultural dialogue taking place in London, Bristol, and Northampton. It is organised by European Alternatives, civil-society organisation responsible for the yearly London Festival of Europe. This series of events forms part of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue, and has the support of the European Commission Representation in the UK.

Training - Ready Steady Start


Are you currently involved in establishing a new group? Or has your organisation been established recently? Ready Steady Start (RSS) will equip you with the basic skills needed to start setting up a sustainable organisation. It will also encourage you to consider if setting up an organisation is the right path for your group.
Who is it for? The RSS course welcomes new or recently established voluntary and community BAMER (Black Asian Minority Ethnic and Refugee) groups.
What's on offer? A FREE 4 day interactive training course delivered by experienced staff from Advice UK, BTEG, LVSC, Refugee Council and two consultants who are specialists in their field.

Resources - MEDACT Maternity and Advocacy Pack


Maternity and advocacy pack to improve access to maternity services for marginalised women.

The pack designed for use by community organisations consists of three storyboard covering pregnancy, birth and becoming a parent. The illustrations show standard NHS maternity care. A supporting booklet provides additional information about maternity care, including clinical care, consent, asking questions, interpreters, social services, domestic abuse and other issues.

Medact has 20,000 copies to distribute to community organisations, free of charge.

Funding - Young People’s Fund 2: Local grants (England)

Minimum grant: £10,000; Maximum grant: £500,000

The Big Lottery Young People’s Fund 2 Local Grants programme will put young people at the heart of local issues and services that affect their lives in England. It’s the chance for young people to lead on developing the activities and services that they want in their local area.

The programme has two aims:
- to ensure that all organisations that provide services to young people, involve them in developing, running and reviewing policies and services
- to help achieve the five Every Child Matters outcomes.

Up to £38 million is available to support projects across England where young people lead from start to finish. This programme will only consider projects that are youth-led.
We want to fund projects where young people are fully involved and improvements are made to young people’s services. We also want to support work to increase understanding of young people’s needs and create further opportunities for involvement in things that affect young people’s lives.

Funding - Diana, Princess of Wales memorial fund


Deadline for first stage 12 September 2008

The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund's Grants Round For Community Organisations Working With Children and Young People Seeking Asylum is now open for application. These grants are aimed at supporting community organisations providing direct services or advocacy for young refugees and people seeking asylum in the UK.

Organisations who are eligible for a grant must be:

  • An impartial, legal, community and non-profit making organisation, charity or company;
  • Working with children and young people under 21 who are refugees or seeking asylum;
  • Based and operating in one or more of the four countries of the UK (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales).

The Refugee Council has signed a contract with the UK Border Agency (UKBA) for the provision of advice and support to new refugees through the new Refugee Integration and Employment Service (RIES). We will provide high-quality RIES services in several English regions – London, the East of England, the West Midlands, and Yorkshire and Humberside.

This Employment Advisor role is the point of initial contact for all RIES clients engaging within the employment services and will be required to work closely with other roles within the overall RIES service. The main areas of work include initial assessments, action planning and advice and guidance. The post-holder will be responsible for ensuring that all required information is effectively captured using appropriate tools and forms and that it is transferred and stored using organisational systems and databases. The post-holder will also be responsible for delivering high quality individual and group career guidance, education and support to new refugees who are intending to access or move a step closer towards employment.

Want to get involved working with children in Years 5 and 6, impacting their lives and making a difference? Then why not apply to work on our Morphing project which is running from 22nd September to March 2009. The days and hours of sessions will vary, the maximum number of hours each week being 10. This is term time only and comes with a salary of £14 per session, for which you will have the opportunity to get involved with sessions such as drumming, dancing, fitness extravaganza.

This is a temporary post from 22nd September to March 2009, with a maximum of 10 hours per week, term time only, with a session lasting 2 hours.

Minimum requirements: Experience of working with young people from a variety of ethnic groups and cultural backgrounds; Proven ability to engage positively with young people of a ‘vulnerable’ nature in both attitude and behaviour; A CRB Disclosure is a requirement of this post.

A small organisation, we are looking for a flexible and independent person with an understanding of refugee issues. The successful candidate will have experience of interacting with young people and will be able to present the Anchor project to other agencies. This post is for one year and will be paid at the rate of £12 per hour.

Working through our network of Volunteer Centres, you will provide resources, set up outreach promotion and engagement activities, develop opportunities for people to get a taste of event and customer service volunteering and support an increase of volunteers for the long-term benefit of London’s voluntary sector.

You will have excellent communication skills, for engaging individuals, communities, partner organisations and volunteer-involving groups, and previous experience of working in volunteer opportunity development capacity will be helpful. Linking with our other 2012-related projects, you will also manage the day-to-day support and supervision of staff and report back to the Director, so you will need experience of managing a small team.
