Events - The role of the Independent Safeguarding Authority in Safeguarding Children

Guest Speaker: Adrian McAllister, Chief Executive of Independent Safeguarding Authority

The Independent Safeguarding Authority’s (ISA) was created to help prevent unsuitable people from working with children and vulnerable adults. It will be the single authority responsible for assessing every person who wants to work or volunteer with vulnerable people including children. Potential employees and volunteers will need to apply to register with the ISA. In this regard it will make all the discretionary barring decisions that are currently taken by the Secretary of State. It will act independently of individual government ministers but report annually to parliament to parliament. What are the implications of the ISA’s work on faith and community organisations working in the African community?

This event is promoted by the Safeguarding African Children Network, which has been established by AFRUCA to provide an opportunity for mutual learning and support among African communities and faith organisations working in the area of or interested in the safeguarding of African children in London. The Network also aims bring to the attention of policy makers and practitioners issues and concerns regarding the protection needs of African children and members’ experiences and expertise in addressing them.

Events - Adult Learners Week - Regional Roadshows
 


2009 will celebrate the eighteenth year of Adult Learners' Week, with events and activities taking place from 9th to 15th May 2009. NIACE, who co-ordinate the campaign, is hosting an Adult Learners' Week Roadshow to give local providers the chance to see what it is all about and to encourage wider participation and more partnership activity.

Adult Learners' Week has successfully engaged with hundreds of thousands of people over the last seventeen years. The Week has encouraged adults in all their diversity to give learning a go, whether for pleasure, to catch up on skills missed out at school or job progression. Since 1992 the campaign has provided the opportunity to highlight that learning is not only good for individual health, self-esteem and employability, but also that it transforms lives.

Events - Promoting BMER women’s leadership & engagement

TAHA's first Women4Change seminar will contribute towards building an action orientated programme, informed and led by women, to empower women and agencies working with or supporting BME women, to coordinate support to women & develop effective interventions and strategies to promote women into leadership roles.

The seminar will focus on: developing a critical understanding of the dynamics of race & gender; inequalities proposals to establish an effective Support & Training Network to empower; BME women identifying women from diverse BME communities interested in engaging in; governance or leadership roles, supporting women, influencing gender equality strategies etc & connecting them with appropriate opportunities, bodies, political or civic positions etc.; access to bespoke training & capacity building programme; connecting individuals & organisations & developing partnership work at; a neighbourhood, borough wide or pan London level with our Alliance of Community Partners (information available at seminar) & others; contributing to shaping an agenda of our national conference in June 2009.

Fundamental Rights Agency publishes 4 new calls for tender:

  • The role of commemoration sites, original sites and historical museums in Holocaust education and Human Rights education in the EU (for further information click here):
  • The impact of the Race Equality Directive: a survey of trade-unions and employers in the member states of the European Union (for further information click here)

Funding - Free support with ICT fundin


Lasa is working with The The City Bridge Trust (www.bridgehousegrants.org.uk) and the Wates Foundation (www.watesfoundation.org.uk) to provide support to voluntary and community groups based in London on all aspects of ICT elements of funding bids to the Trust.

Planning and developing ICT as part of your funding bid is essential. By providing advice on proposed ICT developments and current problems we can pass on the skills and knowledge you need to manage and build your ICT capacity.

The Refugee Council has been successful in obtaining funding from the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) to run a 3-year programme in 3 regions (West Midlands, London, Yorkshire and Humberside) to support separated children and children in families to both access, and be supported, in education.

The objective of this role is to recruit volunteers to mentor and befriend children in addition to delivering talks and presentations in schools. The post-holder will work within the Children’s Section and will be part of the Children’s Section Education Support Team. The post-holder will be expected to develop links with stakeholders of this project, including schools, volunteer groups, and others. This post is subject to CRB disclosure.

ethnic and migrant community organisations in Harrow. The Forum provides expert advice and

A strong and a valuable partner in driving the refugee, minority ethnic and migrant’s agenda for Renewal and West London Refugee Partnership (WESTREP) partnerships in West London.

We are looking for an ambitious, dynamic, high calibre and high potential voluntary sector skilful visionary who is able to operate both at operational and strategic level to/AND translate the Forum’s agenda for the next three years and beyond. Working closely with the Chair, Executive Officers Committee and the Board of Directors you will both head/lead-up an emerging and existing multi-disciplinary task force and drive this ambitious organisation to a successful transformation. You will thoroughly integrate voluntary sector and other business initiatives activities aiming in further sustaining and driving the Forum’s ambitious programme while effectively managing and spearhead project-critical relationships with funders and key stakeholders alike. Importantly you will also develop and implement innovative solutions and processes needed to ensure the project’s overall delivery and strongly contribute to our strategic growth and wider Business Plan.
To meet this unique challenge you will need to be an inspirational leader, able to take initiative and drive wide-scale changes through a diverse team of staff and volunteers. You are likely to have a minimum of eight years experience and exceptional project management and as well as leadership skills gained both at operational and strategic level. You have no less than three years Board membership experience. A proven team leader, you will be of strong personality, well versed in directing, influencing, motivating and negotiating with those around you. Able to see a big picture, you will constantly focus on service as you deliver projects often in demanding conditions and with time constraints. The post involves some evening and week-end work.
