Events - info 2.0 - NCVO's flagship information management conference

24 November 2008, London

Are you up to date with the latest developments in social media and web 2.0 functionality? What are the best ways your organisation can connect, both internally and externally? How can your organisation ensure you are making best use of new media to better serve your beneficiaries?
We have recently seen a huge change in the way in which we connect with our audiences. The rise in new media, new ideas, new networks and new technologies has led to techniques such as blogging, podcasting, wikis and twittering. Harnessing the potential of web 2.0 can seem daunting at first, but embracing new media can improve the way voluntary and community organisations communicate, advocate, campaign and provide services to their beneficiaries.
This is the second one-day Information Conference from NCVO and will look at how organisations can make best use of recent developments in social media to meet the changing needs and expectations of their audiences.
With the first-ever NCVO presentation delivered live from the US via skype, alongside inspiring, energetic plenary speakers, break-out sessions, and experts in their field, delegates will get the information and advice they need to make sure that they are able to fully exploit all these opportunities for their organisations. This conference is aimed at all those working within an information role in the voluntary and community sector.

Networking - African Diaspora Alliance for International Development

UK African diaspora organisations have set up a network to coordinate their activities – the African Diaspora Alliance for International Development (ADAID). The network will support the involvement of African diaspora-led groups in the economic, social and political development of the African continent and has already received an invitation from the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Development to meet with representatives of DfID later this month.
The network, formed by more than 100 UK African NGOs and organisations, aims to lobby the UK government and other funding agencies to make their funds available to African diaspora organisations on the same basis as other NGOs involved in international development.

“The UK has done a lot of work to help Africa and lifted millions out of poverty,” said Ernest Rukangira, coordinator of member organisation Conserve Africa, “but it also needs to help diaspora organisations. We want support here, so we can do more to help communities in Africa.”
Member organisations want to increase their capacity to engage in international development initiatives. Members include African Community Development Foundation, The African Community Development Foundation (ACDF), Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), Akina Mama wa Afrika, Albert Joyle Relief Agency Foundation, Black Community Development Project and Conserve Africa.
“Diaspora organisations face difficulties in raising funds and often lack the experience and capacity to compete with other UK-based NGOs,” said Mr Rukangira, “but we know that DfID is keen to make the most of our contribution.”
More Africans send money to support family and communities in their country of origin than members of any other migrant group settled in the UK, with Ghana and Nigeria the most significant beneficiaries.
“It’s a question of lobbying and influencing the Department for International Development and other agencies, “ said Mr Rukangira. “Working together we’ll achieve so much more.”
ADAID will also seek to use its collective clout to put pressure on African governments to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, as well as to establish good governance and fully recognise the human rights of all their citizens.
