MODA News -Training: Developing projects within a community development framework
 
Tuesday 11th, Friday 14th, Tuesday 18th and Friday 21st November 2008, Stratford.

People attending this course will learn how to:

  1. Use community development approach
  2. Plan work with local communities
  3. Develop ideas into vision and aims
  4. Use different scientific survey/research methods to identify need
  5. Identify various stakeholders and plan to meet their expectations through user-friendly conceptual tools
  6. Identify outcomes from the view-point of users' needs and aspirations
  7. Strategy to sustain the participation of disadvantaged communities and individuals
  8. Use technical tools for devising professional projects
  9. Embed quality standards, measures and indicators in the planning process
  10. Plan fundraising strategy and successful fundraising projects

This training opportunity is open to Management Committee members, volunteers and staff from community groups and voluntary organisations and interested individuals. The training should be of special interest to people working with groups seeking to develop projects to involve older people, young people, refugees, women or people with disabilities.

MODA News - MODA GoldStar Conference: Voluntary Inspiration & Participation
 


19 February 2009, 10:30 am - 4.30 pm

MODA is currently inviting staff and volunteers from voluntary sector groups to participate in our MODA GoldStar Conference.

Theme: involving volunteers from diverse communities.
With information stalls, informal networking time, panel discussion, workshop brainstorming sessions and a special award ceremony celebrating achievements of groups in finding creative and successful ways of involving and supporting volunteers from diverse backgrounds.


The conference aims to enable:
- new organisations to learn from more experienced groups;
- information on volunteering opportunities across London;
- established groups to gain fresh ideas and inspiration from new groups;
- the sharing of good practice in volunteering;
- celebration of individual volunteer and group achievements;
- and to inspire staff, Management Committee members and volunteers to think afresh about volunteering work

Following the conference, MODA would like to publish a collection of case studies (with multi-lingual text and photos) of good practice in cross-cultural volunteering placements to distribute to libraries, local CVSs to inspire other BAMER groups in London and beyond

MODA News - Community Leaders Development Programme
 


The Community Leaders Development Programme aims to provide individuals from Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic and Refugee communities who live in London, with a flexible and tailored range of leadership development opportunities.
This project has two elements: a programme of outreach, taster sessions and entry level training; and a range of longer support options to provide more intensive structured personal and professional development.
The programme is funded by the LDA Opportunities Fund Round 2 and is run by London Voluntary Service Council in partnership with the School for Social Entrepreneurs, Race on the Agenda, MODA and Charitytraining.com.

Events - New Research on Chinese Migration
 


14th November 2008; Lunch 12.30–1.30 ;Speakers and discussion, 1.30-4.30
Middlesex University, Hendon Campus, The Burroughs, NW4

This event at Middlesex University will launch the reports of two recent research projects, Cityscapes of Diaspora: Images and Realities of London’s Chinatown funded by the AHRC and The Changing Chinese Community in London: New migration new needs. These projects have raised a large number of important questions for community organisations, researchers and policy. As well as presenting the main findings from the projects, the event will include discussion of the policy implications of the projects.

The event will be held at the university’s Hendon Campus, close to Hendon Central underground station. It will be attended by members of Chinese community organisations, researchers and others with an interest in the Chinese population in London. Summaries of the reports will be available on the day and the full reports will be obtainable on the university website after the launch. The formal meeting will be preceded by lunch.

Events - Community Research: Getting Started, Moving On

The Association for Research in the Voluntary and Community Sector (ARVAC) in partnership with Islington Voluntary Action Council (IVAC) is hosting a half day seminar on community research.
The seminar includes a re-launch of ARVAC’s widely utilised research toolkit ‘Getting Started’ and a number of practical workshops covering diverse issues related to conducting community research. This seminar and toolkit will be of interest to community groups wishing to begin or to support research within the sector.

There will be these workshops:

  • Community Research: Getting Started
  • Community Research in practice: Connected Care. A research project involving training community members to become researchers to find out about the health, housing and social care needs of their community.
  • Community Research in practice: Croydon Community Against Trafficking (CCAT) a volunteer-run project reflecting local concerns about prostitution and possible trafficking.
  • Exploring funding sources for community research
  • Governance: Using the ‘governance pages project web site’ to improve governance.

Events - LVSC: Our Way: Celebrating and supporting the independence of our sector

LVSC theme this year is independence, which many of us have been discussing recently in light of public service delivery, funding and our own objectives. This conference should be a lively day, with some interesting and maybe controversial views expressed.

There will be a choice of four workshops, that follow the theme of the day:

Events - Papers Please” - The Impact of the Government’s Civil Penalty Regime on the Employment Rights of Migrant Workers

In February 2008 the Government launched its civil penalty regime directed against employers employing undocumented migrant workers. Instant fines of up to £10,000 per worker can now be levied on any employer who is judged to have been lax in checking the immigration status of employees.

MRN’s “Papers Please” report considers the impact of this measure on groups of workers. Amongst groups who are already judged to be vulnerable to exploitation and discrimination, the report finds evidence of a deteriorating situation involving the further erosion of the rights of migrant workers.

This event will be of keen interest to individuals and organisations concerned with the employment of migrants. As well as contributions from the platform speakers there will be opportunities for members of the audience to contribute their views and experiences of the way in which the measure is working.

Training - Refugee Council Workshop - Inclusive Secondary Schools Project

The Refugee Council is organising a series of regional workshops to bring education practitioners together with Refugee Community Organisations (RCOs) and other community organisations in order to encourage joint working. The events will discuss the findings of the research and partnership working phases of the project and introduce the inclusive education resource pack: "Hand in Hand: a resource pack to help meet the needs of refugees and asylum seekers in secondary school"

This resource pack has been produced by the Refugee Council as part of the Inclusive Secondary Schools Project. The aim of the project was to pilot partnership working in four regions across England between secondary schools and refugee community organisations (RCOs) to provide inclusive secondary education to refugees and asylum seekers, and increase the role of their parents and carers in their education.

Funding - Princes Trust community cash


Funding of up to £1,000 for 14-16 year olds; Funding of up to £5,000 for those aged 16-25

Community Cash Awards are grants of up to £5,000 to help young people set up a project that will benefit their community.

You just have to come up with an idea for a project that will improve life in a local community in the UK. Maybe a new basketball court, a music studio, a youth club, sex education workshops in schools, a youth advisory board, even a local magazine.

Anyone who is aged 14-16 and is in school, but struggling or aged 16-25, unemployed or working less than 16 hours a week can apply.

Projects must:

  • be run and managed by people between the ages of 14 and 25
  • clearly benefit the local community
  • benefit the people running the project; and
  • be a new or developing project.

Funding - Sports Coaching Bursaries


One of the key legacy objectives of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games is to increase participation in sports that we not only need more willing men and woman to take up sport but also coaches to teach them. The London Coaching Bursary Scheme ran from October 2007 to March 2008. More than 800 Londoners benefited form subsidies to enable them achieve coaching qualifications. Due to the success of the scheme a second round of bursaries is being made available up until 31 March 2009.

Call - Digital Mentors: An Invitation to Tender


Communities and Local Government are seeking bids from individual organisations and consortia which have community engagement and media literacy training experience. We envisage the lead organisation as coming from the community and voluntary sector or the commercial sector where there are demonstrable strong community links. Local government partners may also be interested. The successful bidder will be in a co-ordination role, helping shape and lay the foundations for a sustainable and scalable national initiative. The co-ordinator will identify and support a variety of demonstrator projects which can most benefit from access to 'Digital Mentors'.

The Department will be hosting a workshop on 19 November 2008, 3-5pm for those interested in tendering. This will be at the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, 1 Victoria Street, London SW1H 0ET.

LAWA is a voluntary organisation consisting of a Refuge and Advice Centre to provide support, temporary accommodation for Latin American women and their children fleeing domestic violence.
The person appointed will work with LAWA’s users to promote self realization through in house training, workshops and events open to users; to promote awareness and the impact of domestic violence; to work with the team to assist women in accessing external services and take part in the referral process.

The post is open to women only and is exempt under section 7(2)e of the Sex Discrimination Act 1975. Fluency in English / Spanish essential, Portuguese desirable.
