| Events - Shami Chakrabarti on Children and Families in the Asylum System | ||
| This lecture is the third event in Barnardo's lecture series and addresses the tensions around our moral duty to protect asylum seeking children while they are in the UK whilst many children and their families awaiting decisions on their futures face destitution, abject poverty, racial harassment and demoralising uncertainty. Why shouldn't this vulnerable group of children have the same rights as any other child? Why shouldn't this vulnerable group of families have the same rights as any other family? Hear Shami Chakrabarti, Director of Liberty, give her views on the asylum system and answer questions from the audience. The lecture will start at 6.15pm and will be followed by a free drinks reception at around 7.30pm where you can continue the debate and find out more about Barnardo's work helping children, young people and families survive the asylum application process. The lecture is open to the public and free to attend but please RSVP to lectures@barnardos.org.uk to guarantee your place. For further information click here. |

| Training - London East Connexions: CAF Cards for Practitioners | ||
|
The Common Assessment Framework has created an opportunity to introduce a unique set of resources to help young people move from their present state to a desired state based around well-formed outcomes. The sets of CAF Cards and Road Sign Cards have been developed with young people by Positive Steps Oldham, and have recently, been named as winners at ICG The National Career Awards 2008, for initiatives focusing on social inclusion, innovation and outstanding practice. London East Connexions has the opportunity to roll out CAF Card training across London and the South East. The cards allow the exploration of imagery to plan brighter futures and identify how to support and resource the change process. The cards are underpinned by Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) principles. They create an environment that encourages young people to explore new possibilities. They can help to lift the barriers. The young person becomes the owner of the keys for change. The cards will help young people to look at their lives differently, before exploring what to do and build a desire to change and set new goals. Please note that this training day is NOT about how the Common Assessment Framework will work generally, but is about providing practitioners with a tool which will enhance their young person centred work. For further information on this opportunity and to get an application

The target was reached with a recent loan of £14,000 to African Women Enterprise Group. AWEG improves the quality of life of people of African origin in Greater London by providing youth mentoring and coaching, women’s health and employment support, and cultural activities. This loan was made from LRS’ Mutual Aid Fund, a scheme to provide microfinance loans by training communities to manage their own microloan fund. LRS provides loan finance and business training to social and ethical enterprises – organisations which have social, ethical or environmental aims in addition to making profits. Unlike the commercial banking sector, where lending has almost stopped, LRS is continuing to lend where its funds can provide most benefit to the community, creating and sustaining jobs as well as supporting the voluntary sector.
