| Friday 6 March 2009, 1 – 3pm Children England’s head office in Central London - Unit 25 Angel Gate, City Road, London EC1V 2PT Children England has commissioned GHK Consulting to undertake a research study exploring small organisations’ experiences of commissioning. GHK are an independent company with a team specialising in children, young people and families policy and practice research. The aim of the research is:· To focus on the positive steps that can be taken as part of Every Child Matters to create and sustain an environment in which small VCS organisations thrive The research will be exploring the perspectives of organisations working with children, young people and/or families with expenditure of less than £100k. As part of this there will be a focus group held in London. Organisations that take part will not to be named and neither will the people who take part in an interview (unless you wish to be). | Resources - Rethinking migration |
|
|
Governments across Europe are responding to public concerns about the economic impacts of migration by developing and implementing more selective immigration policies. Using a variety of sophisticated tools, including the UK's new "points based system", policymakers are trying to attract "useful" migrants to our borders, while keeping "unwanted" migrants out. By letting in only those migrants who will contribute positively to our economies, the aim of these policies is to maximise the economic benefits of migration while minimising its (apparent) social costs. This paper questions the utility of this approach. The costs and benefits of migration are too tied up with the regulatory structures of our labour markets and welfare systems to try to achieve this objective simply by selecting the "right" kind of migrants, as if their particular skills-set was the only variable that mattered. If our aim is to enhance the productive incorporation of migrant workers, existing efforts to manage migration require a much more holistic approach. This does not mean that states should abandon efforts to select migrants, but rather that immigration, labour market and welfare policies need to be developed in tandem.' | Resources - Undocumented Children in Europe: Invisible Victims of Immigration Restrictions |
|
|
Undocumented children in Europe may be living with members
of their families but can also be unaccompanied, living alone without
their parents or guardians. Whatever their condition, the fact that these
children are in Europe without protection through official family reunification
programs or asylum processes makes them "undocumented" and as
such affected by policies on irregular migration. This report aims to
investigate the particular vulnerability that characterizes the reality
of undocumented children and analyze their specific needs and problems
encountered in various European countries. The report is specifically
focused on the discrimination that these children might face in accessing
their basic social rights in the areas of education, health care and housing.

of the report. | |

| Jobs - Refugees into Teaching’ project: National Guidance Worker | |
|
Our Refugees into Teaching Project aims to help the hundreds of refugee teachers in this country - skilled professionals who could work in UK schools, but face a number of significant barriers. Through various innovative methods, we enable refugees to overcome these barriers, and use their valuable skills. In this newly-created role, you will provide refugee teachers with expert support, advice, information and guidance – in person, via email and over the phone. Acting as a central point of contact, you’ll carry out assessments, identify teachers’ support needs, and make sure that these are promptly and efficiently addressed.
