| Events - The Equality Implications of Being a Migrant in Britain: a review | |
Although migrants are a hot topic in the UK, there are few hard facts. There is no agreement on how we define “migrants” and a lack of data on equalities and migrants, especially in relation to age, disability, gender, race, religion or belief, or sexual orientation. Their diversity has implications for the development of immigration and citizenship policies. This report reviews the available information about inequalities that migrant workers and their families face in Britain today. It sets out the rapidly changing policy context and its implications, analyses recent data, and examines the experiences of migrants themselves. If you would like to attend, please RSVP Carol Andrewes:

Campaign - Let asylum seekers work |
In hard times, society expects everyone to pull their weight where they can. Yet asylum seekers are forced to live on handouts or sometimes nothing at all. So why do we deny them the chance to work – then force them to bear the bruntof public hostility? The 'Let Them Work' campaign goal is to give asylum seekers permissionto work if their cases have not been resolved within six months – including everyone who has had their claim refused but can’t go home. There are now some new campaigning initiatives which we ask all supporters to help to promote this goal – this will cost you nothing and only takes a few minutes online

Resources - LVSC research on London's LINks |
LINks (Local Involvement Networks)are the new statutory forums that will allow local people wider opportunities for involvement in the commissioning and delivery of their health and social care services. They are replacing Patient and Public Involvement Forums. The volunteer members of the LINks are to be supported by a LINk host organisation appointed by the Local Authority in which they work. The research examines the commissioning processes, experiences and results of London' s LINks ad also informs our general understanding of the impact of commissioning on VCS funding in London: the creation of the LINks gave us a unique opportunity to observe the commissioning of a single service, based on common, nationally-derived objectives and guidance, simultaneously taking place in all London boroughs and in an area of policy where VCS groups should have been well-placed to bid for and win contracts. If you would like a hard copy of the report, please email Gethyn Williams at gethyn@lvsc.org.uk or call 020 7700 8206 | |

| Jobs - Refugees into Teaching’ project: National Guidance Worker | |
Our Refugees into Teaching Project aims to help the hundreds of refugee teachers in this country - skilled professionals who could work in UK schools, but face a number of significant barriers. Through various innovative methods, we enable refugees to overcome these barriers, and use their valuable skills. In this newly-created role, you will provide refugee teachers with expert support, advice, information and guidance – in person, via email and over the phone. Acting as a central point of contact, you’ll carry out assessments, identify teachers’ support needs, and make sure that these are promptly and efficiently addressed. It will be up to you to develop our links with the relevant community organisations across the country – we aim to provide them with the training and support they need to gain expertise in this area, enabling them to advise refugee teachers themselves. Throughout your work, you’ll liaise closely with colleagues, ensuring a consistent and co-ordinated approach at all times. You’ll need to understand the issues facing refugees who want to teach in the UK – and will have experience of providing first-rate training and careers advice to adults. This will include experience of carrying out assessments, creating individual action plans, and working in close partnership with external agencies. You must also have a track record of delivering training to a wide range of audiences, prioritising a busy workload, and working to set timescales and budgets.
