The Community Leaders Development Programme aims to provide individuals from Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic and Refugee communities who live in London, with a flexible and tailored range of leadership development opportunities.
This project has two elements: a programme of outreach, taster sessions and entry level training; and a range of longer support options to provide more intensive structured personal and professional development.
The programme is funded by the LDA Opportunities Fund Round 2 and is run by London Voluntary Service Council in partnership with the School for Social Entrepreneurs, Race on the Agenda, MODA and Charitytraining.com.

MODA News - Workshop: "When Is a Volunteer Not a Volunteer?"

Tuesday 21st April 2009, 10-1pm;
5th Floor Class room,Berkley Business Centres, Citygate House,
246-250 Romford Road,Forest Gate, E7 9HZ
(Buses 25 and 86 stop outside the building)

If you pay your workers you need to be able to understand what their employment status is. People who work a few hours a week, once a month or less regularly often just invoice the organisation and act as free-lance, but does this mean that they are genuinely self-employed? In reality they are more likely to be part-time employees and this means that they have certain rights under employment law.

This useful training session aimed at people volunteering on Management Committees will look at what a volunteer, an employee, and a self-employed worker is and is not. It will explore what organisations can practically do if their "free-lancers" turn out to be part-time employees.

Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. To book a place on this workshop please click here. Since this training room is on the 5th floor please let us know if you have any special needs.

MODA is pleased to be working in partnership with LVSC PEACE Project and the Volunteer Network Centre, Newham to run this training session free of charge. We would like to hear what other training topics would around Good Practice in Volunteering would be of interest to MODA groups.

Events - The Equality Implications of Being a Migrant in Britain: a review

Friday 24 April 2008, Middlesex University, 12.30-17.00
Room C219, Hendon Campus, The Burroughs, London NW4 4BT

Although migrants are a hot topic in the UK, there are few hard facts. There is no agreement on how we define “migrants” and a lack of data on equalities and migrants, especially in relation to age, disability, gender, race, religion or belief, or sexual orientation. Their diversity has implications for the development of immigration and citizenship policies.

This report reviews the available information about inequalities that migrant workers and their families face in Britain today. It sets out the rapidly changing policy context and its implications, analyses recent data, and examines the experiences of migrants themselves.

If you would like to attend, please RSVP Carol Andrewes: c.andrewes@mdx.ac.uk

Campaign - Let asylum seekers work

In hard times, society expects everyone to pull their weight where they can. Yet asylum seekers are forced to live on handouts or sometimes nothing at all. So why do we deny them the chance to work – then force them to bear the bruntof public hostility?

The 'Let Them Work' campaign goal is to give asylum seekers permissionto work if their cases have not been resolved within six months – including everyone who has had their claim refused but can’t go home.

There are now some new campaigning initiatives which we ask all supporters to help to promote this goal – this will cost you nothing and only takes a few minutes online

  • Visit www.refugeecouncil.org.uk/letthemwork to sign the campaign pledgeonline – then send it to your friends and networks;
  • The campaign is looking for organisations to sign up, so please also download the organisation support page here;
  • On the site you can send a mail to your MP asking them to sign the pledgeand to support EDM No. 960 in Parliament which supports the Let Them WorkCampaign.

Resources - Vinvolved Team

vinvolved is the new national youth volunteering programme, which aims to revolutionise youth action and leadership in England. We work with education providers, the public sector, social enterprises and not-for-profit groups and charities across nine London boroughs, to create and develop innovative volunteering opportunities for 16-25 year olds.

We are becoming increasingly aware of the vast amount of skilled talent out there in our target age group and these individuals are looking for volunteering experiences that go beyond what volunteering typically is. Call us if you need help and be creative – anything is possible!

If you need something doing, we know someone who is looking for the experience:

• Get help attracting more young people to your organisation
• Re-design your marketing literature or website
• Get IT support for your staff or help with programming new systems
• Find a volunteer bookkeeper
• Engage a group of young creatives to transform your public space

If you have never taken volunteers before but can see the potential, we can help to get you up-to-speed with national standards for volunteer placement providers.If you would like us to advertise your existing opportunities, provide any support in building your capacity for volunteer placement or talk about novel ways of engaging groups of volunteers in events etc, please get in touch.
