MODA News - Community Leaders Development Programme
 


The Community Leaders Development Programme aims to provide individuals from Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic and Refugee communities who live in London, with a flexible and tailored range of leadership development opportunities.
This project has two elements: a programme of outreach, taster sessions and entry level training; and a range of longer support options to provide more intensive structured personal and professional development.
The programme is funded by the LDA Opportunities Fund Round 2 and is run by London Voluntary Service Council in partnership with the School for Social Entrepreneurs, Race on the Agenda, MODA and Charitytraining.com.

Events - Strangers into Citizens rally
 


4 May 2009, London

Strangers into Citizens is a national campaign calling for a one-off regularisation of long-term irregular migrants in the UK. There are an estimated 500,000 irregular migrants in the UK. They face exploitation and uncertainty. They want to work, integrate and be able to contribute to life in the UK as full members of our society.

Strangers into Citizens is holding a National Rally on the May Bank Holiday in Trafalgar Square in Central London. They want to show the UK government that there is a broad coalition that supports an earned amnesty for irregular migrants.

A Consultation & Action orientated Meeting on Government’s Tackling Race Inequalities Consultation

The Govt. is consulting the public & stakeholders for a 12-week period ending on 18th May 2009 on priorities for its future work & strategy to tackle race inequalities on a range of issues. Its consultation publication sets out a series of questions on Government’s future approach for people to consider and respond to.

Events - NCVO Conferece - Multimedia Explained
 


Are you making the most of multimedia in your publishing and communications strategies? Do you know how to use multimedia to get your message across? With new technologies and ways of communicating constantly emerging, it is vital that organisations have the information and resources they need to use these to their advantage. Keeping up to date with current trends can be confusing and expensive. This conference by NCVO (the National Council for Voluntary Organisations) will help you to make informed decisions based on the expertise and experience of multimedia professionals.

Who should attend? Anyone who works in communications, marketing or publishing for a charity, voluntary or community organisation, who wants to start using multimedia to get their message across. Aimed at beginners to multimedia, the sessions on the day will guide you through the multimedia options available and show you how to integrate these into your current ways of working.

Events - Age Concern and Help the Ages new charity event
 


The four national Age Concerns in the UK have joined together with Help the Aged to form new national charities dedicated to improving the lives of older people.

In May and June 2009 they are organizing 20 half-day events in 10 different locations across England. These events are designed to introduce the new charity to as wide an audience of older people as possible and also to talk together to find out how you’d like to work with the new organization.

For each location there will be two meetings - one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The morning event will last from 10.30am-12.30pm and the afternoon event from 2 pm - 4pm. Lunch will be provided free of charge to everyone who takes part. All venues are accessible for people with disabilities and will have an induction loop.

Training - Working with Black and Minority Ethnic Children and Families


Tuesday 12th May 2009; 8:45am – 4:00pm; Central London

AFRUCA (Africans Unite Against Child Abuse) are pleased to invite you to participate in the next session of our popular training course. Target Group: All staff working with children and families.
Aims: To explore and build on the values, knowledge and skills required to engage with and work effectively with Black and minority ethnic children and their families in assessment, safeguarding and care planning activities.

This specialist training course is designed to enable those working closely with children from black and other ethnic minorities develop a stronger working knowledge of clients from these backgrounds and the key role that culture and religion can play in child upbringing in many BME communities. It will assist participants to assess and examine some cultural and religious practices and the impact on parenting styles and child safeguarding. Participants will work to identify strategies to promote better safeguarding of children and to intervene positively in families where there are child protection concerns based on the influence of cultural practices and religion. This course will also assist in identifying key strategies to better engage families in order to safeguard vulnerable children.

Course Facilitator: Debbie Ariyo is Founder and Executive Director of AFRUCA. Debbie has a vast experience advising agencies across the UK on child safeguarding issues. She has worked with many agencies and has designed and facilitated many training courses for local authorities and other children’s charities and their staff on a variety of issues confronting BME children and families. She is a highly rated, experienced trainer with specialist knowledge of issues in working with BME children and their families in the UK.

Training - Anti-social behaviour and Community Problem Solving


5 May 2009; 9.30-16.15; The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund, London

All problems whether personal, community or criminal have a structure. Understanding that structure and pulling it apart is the art of problem solving. This training aims to equip delegates with a set of problem solving tools that can be used to tackle any problem, large or small. Whilst complete elimination of a problem can never be guaranteed - some problems are simply too big, too complex or beyond resources, in most cases, you can achieve a reduction in the incidence and severity of a problem and the impact it has on people's lives.

This free training is open to voluntary organisations and community groups only. Places are limited to one delegate per organisation / group and will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

Resources - Migrant Worker Availability in the East of England


IPPR was commissioned by the East of England Development Agency to conduct research into the role of migration in the economy of the East of England, to analyse associated economic risks and suggest ways to manage them. The research was part funded by the European Social Fund. This report is based on research undertaken by ippr in 2008.

UK migration policy will need to be flexible to respond to changing economic conditions. It is important that the regional picture reaches national government, and that national migration policy is responsive to the particular needs of individual regions and sectors.

Resources - AFRUCA launches booklet on child abuse for African parents

A new booklet "What is Child Abuse?" targeting African parents was launched at AFRUCA's National Conference: "Enhancing the Safety and Wellbeing of African Children in the UK" in Birmingham in March 2009. Funding - The Mayor's Fund for London


Publically launched on April 7th, The Mayor's fund for London is a new charity with ambitious plans to give disadvantaged young people and their families a better chance in life. "Areas of London suffer some of the worst economic and social deprivation in Britain, robbing young people of the opportunities they deserve. We must ensure that young people get help and support so as to turn a poverty of aspiration into positive expectations and a better life."

Established Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, the fund is a non-political, independent charity run by a Board of Trustees drawn from the public, private and voluntary sectors. Funding - Inspiring Communities


The The Department for Communities and Local Government "Inspiring Communities" programme aims to support communities to raise the aspirations and educational attainment of young people.

Initially based in 15 neighbourhoods, it will fund and support neighbourhood partnerships to deliver a programme of activities working with young people, their parents and communities, to create new opportunities, broaden horizons and build up the self-confidence of local people. Partnerships responsible for work locally will have at their core schools, councils, third sector organisations, parents and young people. Local businesses and relevant service providers are also encouraged to become involved in the Inspiring Communities initiative.

Funding - Community Cash Awards for Youth Projects


Young people are being given the chance to claim a share of £1 million to help tackle the dangers of drugs, crime and play a positive role in their community. The Royal Bank of Scotland Community Cash Awards will see £1 million of grants being distributed by youth charity "The Prince's Trust" to young people who want to run community projects in some of Britain's poorest areas. The Awards, worth £250 to £5,000, are available to disadvantaged 14 to 25-year-olds who want to transform their area and learn practical skills. Projects could range from improving local youth facilities to tackling teenage pregnancy or drug misuse.

Projects must: Be run and managed by people between the ages of 14 and 25; Clearly benefit the local community; Benefit the people running the project; Be a new or developing project.
Previous projects supported include; an amateur boxing project to give young people greater confidence; and a media project to promote community cohesion and greater understanding between the local community and asylum seekers. Applications can be made at any time.

The Refugee Council’s ‘Refugees into Teaching’ project is looking for an Information Officer to join their team.

It’s not easy to become a teacher in the UK when you’ve qualified overseas, and now need to retrain, gain QTS and find a job over here. As an Information Officer with us, you’ll help remove the barriers to this process. Through your work, you’ll provide first-rate information and resources to refugee teachers, and also to the organisations that can offer them vital support.
Making sure that we’re using appropriate, effective and innovative communication methods – such as forums, email, blogs, newsletters and videos – the Information Officer will build relationships with key contacts in further and higher education, local authorities, government departments and community organisations. You’ll also support the decision making process of our Refugees into Teaching project, providing up-to-the-minute information regarding changes and developments in the education sector.
