Events - Launch of The New Londoners magazine

Wednesday June 17, 6-7.30pm; House of Commons, Committee Room 9

Colin Firth, Mark Haddon and Eugene Hutz of Gogol Bordello, have all contributed to the 2nd issue of the New Londoners, a free London newspaper which is available throughout the capital from Sunday and for the duration of Refugee Week. The unique newspaper was put together by volunteers, members and staff from the Migrant Resource Centre in London.
The New Londoners aims to dispel some of the myths created by mainstream media in their reporting of refugee and asylum issues. It provides an alternative and realistic view of the contribution of immigration to the capital, differing from that which is often portrayed. The newspaper also provides a voice of those who are normally reluctant, for obvious reasons, to come forward and reveals some of their more alarming and distressing experiences.

The Migrants Resource Centre and the APPGR cordially invite you to the launch of the 2009 issue. We hope you are able to join The Right Honourable MP Neil Gerrard and a panel of experts from UNHCR, the BBC, Oneworld.net, The New Londoners, and other guests for an informed discussion on migrants and refugees in the UK media.

We invite you to share your views and to engage with the panel that will look at the coverage of migrants and refugees in the media, and the new emerging role of migrant and refugee communities in redressing the imbalance in the coverage in parts of the media.

For more information and to book a place, please contact Nazek Ramadan: nazek@migrants.org.uk or Robert Melnitschuk: melnitschukr@parliament.uk

Events - Futurejobs Fund - Social Enterprise London information event

Wednesday 24 June 2009, 18:15, Social Enterprise London, 1 London Bridge

Following an overwhelmingly positive response to our call for information last week, Social Enterprise London is inviting social entrepreneurs and social enterprise leaders from across London to an information event on the Future Jobs Fund. The evening will include a presentation from Philip Hayes from the Government Office for London on the details of the Fund, and how social enterprises can effectively access it. The Future Jobs Fund, administered by the Department for Work and Pensions, is seeking bids which create at least 30 new jobs over a six month period. Whilst this seems a lot, bids can be made up of partnerships between public or private bodies and social enterprises, and it's this aspect of the Fund which the information event will focus on.

To remind you of the details of the Fund, for each new job created, the employing organisation would receive up to £6,500. Each bid will need to demonstrate that:
- it will create extra jobs, lasting at least 6 months, either for long term unemployed young people or people in unemployment hotspots
- the work done will benefit local communities
- the work will be under way quickly

We realise that we are not giving much notice in advance of the event, but the reason is that outline bids for first allocations of funding need to be submitted before the end of June, so I hope you understand the need for haste. To book a place at this event or for more information, please complete this booking form and return it to events@sel.org.uk. Please note that places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. If you have any queries then please call the SEL team on 020 7022 1920 or e-mail matthew@sel.org.uk.

Funding - New Special Initiative on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

Closing date for application: 24 July 2009

City Parochial Foundation, Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and Rosa – the UK Women’s Fund, are pleased to announce a new collaborative initiative to strengthen community-based prevention work on FGM in the UK.
Funding will be available for up to three years to develop work within FGM practising communities. All three funders agree that one of the most effective ways of tackling FGM in the UK is by investing in community organisations based within practising communities, in particular, women’s organisations.

Organisations need to be a registered charity or a voluntary organisation engaged in charitable work.
