MODA News - Workshop - When is a volunteer not a volunteer?

Tuesday 16th July 2009, 10-1pm;
ground floor, Berkley Business Centres, Citygate House,
246-250 Romford Road, Forest Gate, E7 9HZ (Buses 25/ 86 stop outside the building) .

If you pay your workers you need to be able to understand what their employment status is. People who work a few hours a week, once a month or less regularly often just invoice the organisation and act as free-lance, but does this mean that they are genuinely self-employed? In reality they are more likely to be part-time employees and this means that they have certain rights under employment law.

This useful training session aimed at people volunteering on Management Committees will look at what a volunteer, an employee, and a self-employed worker is and is not. It will explore what organisations can practically do if their "free-lancers" turn out to be part-time employees. We are organising this training session in response to very positive feedback from previous training groups participants who would like to recommend the training to others.
Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. To book a place on this workshop please click here.

MODA is pleased to be working in partnership with LVSC PEACE Project and the Volunteer Network Centre, Newham to run this training session free of charge. We would like to hear what other training topics around Good Practice in Volunteering would be of interest to MODA groups.

Events - Allowed to Remain! But allowed to belong?

Refugees' experiences of nationality, identity and equal status
Wednesday 1 July 2009, 9.30-15.30, Ealing Town Hall, New Broadway, W5 2BY

Some people describe an immediate sense of ‘belonging’ in Britain, of hope, excitement, acceptance and new friends. Others struggle for decades with feelings of loss and uncertainty in a culture that seems to stay as strange, confusing and unfriendly as when they first landed at the airport. Although many people describe a sense of being accepted and even feeling excited every time they walk through the diverse, multi-cultural streets of their part of London, they often have more mixed feelings and uncertainty about whether they ‘belong’ in Britain.
The assumption at the heart of REAP’s conference (and AGM) this July is that when people feel that they belong in a society, a country, a city, a community; when they care about where they live and believe that other people care about them; then everyone in that society is happier. But members, participants and contacts of REAP have expressed in many ways a sense that refugees and other migrants feel there is a growing range of influences in their lives that delay, reduce or even prevent them from feeling they ‘belong’.

It is essential to book your place - contact: olesya@reap.org.uk or tel. 01895441530.

Events - Homeless Link Annual Conference 2009

6-8 July 2009, University of Warwick

Join us in Warwick for the annual event for the homelessness sector, where we will be looking at different methods to prevent and end rough sleeping and homelessness. If you work with homeless people or are interested in ending homelessness then this is the event for you.

In November 2008, the government announced the No One Left Out rough sleeping strategy which signalled a committment to work with partner agencies to end rough sleeping by 2012. However it is also recognised, that if we are to achieve our goals of ending homelessness, we also need to focus on those who are at risk; to stop the flow of people onto the streets.
This is becoming increasingly important given the tougher climate in which we live. We will never be able to eradicate people’s vulnerabilities, but we need to work together to offer help at the right time. Your local knowledge is invaluable in achieving this, and we hope, through this conference, to explore what we, as a sector, can do to help those that are often ignored by others.

Resources - Migration and Rural Economies: Assessing and addressing risks

IPPR Report, by Laura Chappell, Maria Latorre, Jill Rutter and Jaideep Shah.

Migration to and from the UK has changed distinctively over the last decade, with increased immigration and emigration. Migratory movements have also become more diverse. Migrants have been coming from more places than ever before, and are found across a similarly diverse variety of locations and sectors within the UK. Importantly, this includes more migration to rural areas, particularly since the expansion of the European Union in 2004.
The expansion of migration to rural areas has had a range of impacts on rural economies. Migrants have made significant economic contributions: filling vacancies and skills gaps and promoting job creation and productivity. Migrants have been particularly important in supporting some key sectors including agriculture, food processing and hospitality.
This paper examines the implications of increasing migration to rural areas, looking in particular at the economics of this phenomenon. We explore the roles migrants are playing, the economic impacts of migration on existing populations and businesses, and what future migratory trends might be. In particular, we consider whether recent migration to rural Britain has led to any risks for rural economies; and if so, how these risks can be managed.

Funding - Big Lottery Strategic Framework

BIG (Big Lottery Fund) is proud to produce BIG Thinking – a Strategic Framework to 2015 and What You Told Us. These two new documents are the culmination of the biggest consultation exercise BIG has ever undertaken – with nearly 3,500 responses to the online survey between November 2008 to February 2009.

BIG Thinking sets out the principles which will underpin BIG’s approach to funding in the UK in the next six years. It explains what we want to achieve and how we will deliver our Mission & Vision: bringing real improvements to communities and the lives of people most in need. All of our future programmes will use the new framework as a starting point and it sets out our ambitions for being an efficient and responsive funder.

What You Told Us This was the largest consultation ever carried out by a Lottery distributor, reflecting our position as a body that delivers around half of all Lottery funding to communities ...
- 3,550KB is an in-depth analysis of the responses to the consultation, drawing on material from the online survey and the regional and national meetings held during the three months of the consultation. It shows where there was the strongest support for our ideas and where we will want to discuss issues further in the coming months. It demonstrates how we came to the conclusions in BIG Thinking – our Strategic Framework to 2015 and we see it as a crucial part of what has been a very open and transparent consultation process.

Jobs - Refugee Council - Mentoring Coordinator (Refugees into Teaching) - Brixton

Closing date for applications: Friday 17th July 2009. Interviews to be held Thursday 30th July.
Salary £25,997 pro-rata (Part-time 21 hrs pw) Fixed-term to end of October 2011.

Funded by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) until October 2011, our Refugees into Teaching Project aims to help the hundreds of refugee teachers in this country - skilled professionals who could work in UK schools, but face a number of significant barriers. Through various methods, we enable refugees to overcome these barriers, and use their valuable skills constructively.

You’ll play a key role in developing and implementing an innovative new mentoring scheme, which is launching this year. Matching refugee teachers seeking employment with teachers currently working in the UK, the scheme will provide personalised, one-to-one support. It will enable refugee teachers to access and complete their UK teacher training, become more familiar with the schooling system in this country, and ultimately secure appropriate employment.
The mentoring scheme will be running in 3 regions, and will have a co-ordinator in each one. You’ll take responsibility for establishing and implementing it in your specific region, working closely with the other two co-ordinators to ensure a consistent and coherent approach. Getting teachers involved in the scheme, you’ll match mentors and mentees, and help them draw up mutual agreements – establishing clear aims and objectives, and making sure that these are achievable.
You’ll need a good track record of supporting people in a relevant context, organising training events, and building strong links with voluntary and statutory organisations. It’s important that you’re good at managing your own time, and that you share our appreciation of diversity and its benefits. Finally, you must be able to travel as required – and will ideally have experience of working in compulsory education in England.
