Training - Refugee Council Training on Housing

Asylum seekers, refugees and migrants: Entitlement to Housing and other services
5 November 2009, London

Frequent changes to asylum and immigration legislation and policy can make it difficult for practitioners to keep up-to-date and to ensure that they are offering most effective advice and practice. On the other hand, asylum seekers, refugees and migrants are often not aware of their rights and entitlements and do not have a support network in this country.
Consequently, they are more likely to end up homeless and without appropriate support. This course will explore the legislative framework and routes of access to housing and other services for asylum seekers, refugees and migrants.

This course will be participative and interactive providing a variety of practical tips useful to those who provide direct housing support to these groups as well as managers, policy makers and others within the organisation. On completing this course participants will have a practical understanding of:The difference between asylum seekers, refugees and migrants ;The asylum process and possible outcomes ; Entitlements to services for asylum seekers, refugees and migrants (including: asylum support, housing, welfare benefits, health, social care, education, etc) ;Identification of accommodation and housing support issues relevant to these groups ;The obstacles these groups face when accessing housing and other services and ways of overcoming them ; Relevant legislation surrounding support access.

Resources - Duty to Involve Research

Urban Forum is carrying out a research project looking at the new ‘duty to consult, inform and involve' (also known as the ‘duty to involve') among local authorities.

The aim of this work is to find out how local authorities are meeting their requirements under the duty, to understand what good practice exists, what is preventing good practice, and to identify what support people need to participate in local decision-making. This initial survey specifically explores awareness of the duty, how local authorities are putting the duty into practice, barriers to involvement, and support needed.

The survey is mainly tick boxes and should only take few minutes to complete, the deadline for response is 7th August. For further information and to complete the survey click here.
