Events - Asylum Monologues

Thursday 24 September 2009, 7pm - The Human Rights Action Centre, London

Asylum Monologues is a first-hand account of the UK’s asylum system in the words of people who have experienced it. With personal testimony at its core combined with public opinion, political statements and statistical fact, this production disseminates what it really means to be displaced in the UK. It was launched in London at Amnesty International in June 2006 and has been on a rolling tour around the country ever since.

"This is the thing that the British people don't understand. They think we came here just because we want to live here. We came here because there are problems. That's why we came here".

The play will be followed by a discussion with the writer and human rights campaigners.

Resources - Economic Impact on London of a Regularisation of Irregular Migrants

This report by Ian Gordon, Kathleen Scanlon, Tony Travers and Christine Whitehead of the London School of Economics, was commissioned by GLA economics and launched in mid-June 2009.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, and the GLA have stated their wish to explore the proposition of an earned regularisation scheme for irregular migrants in the UK. The report includes four main sections: an estimate of the numbers; factors to take into account when designing a regularisation scheme; assessment of the impact of regularisation on social welfare; and an estimate of the fiscal impact. The report notes that hard data are few and far between.

Resources - A Moving Story. Is there a case for a major museum of migration in the UK?

Publisher: IPPR ; Author: Migration Museum Working Group

The Migration Museum Working Group was formed in late 2006 to discuss what more could be done to represent migration issues within the UK museum and heritage sector. It consists of people who share an interest in these issues and a passion for seeing migration more appropriately represented in cultural life in the UK.
Over more than two millennia migration has continuously shaped and reshaped the people of the British Isles. Migration is an important part of our history and of contemporary society. But while we have major museums on most other aspects of our national life, devoted to everything from war and science to transport and the media, there is no major museum of migration. It was in this context that the Migration Museum Working Group was formed in late 2006. The group's aim was to outline the case for a major Museum of Migration in the UK.
