MODA News - Research project on funding for minority organisations

MODA and Middlesex University are working on a research project about funding and resources available to migrant and minority organisations in London.
The project is centred on a survey of organisations which will gather information about the services they provide, the community needs they try to address, the financial and organizational challenges they face and the creative ways they are finding to cope. The research also aims to explore the effects of the current economic and political climate on these organisations and effective roles that second tier organisations may play in supporting them.
This initiative is funded through the Social Enterprise Capacity Building Cluster, a programme supported by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the Office of the Third Sector.

If you would like to participate in the survey you can either fill in the questionnaire available online (click here) or contact a.dangelo@mdx.ac.uk for a telephone interview.
We will also organise some focus groups where you will be able to share your opinions and join in a discussion with members from other community organisations. (Travel expenses will be provided). Participating organisations will be acknowledged in the final research report and invited to the launch event in June 2010.

Events - Launch of Research Report on Chinese Older People in Haringey

22nd March , 12.00 - 14.30, Haringey Chinese Centre, 211 Langham Road, London N15 3LH

This event will see the launch of a recently completed research report: Chinese Older People in Haringey: meeting the needs of an ‘invisible’ community. The research was carried out by researchers at Middlesex University working with the Haringey Chinese Centre.

The report shows that, although Chinese people make up a significant proportion of Haringey’s population, and a growing percentage of older people, they have remained largely invisible in relation to the planning of services. They experience, however, considerable problems as they get older, including social and physical isolation and difficulties in accessing appropriate services. The report details the experience of a sample of Chinese people living in Haringey and proposes a number of recommendations for to policy makers and service providers, including Chinese organisations.

Events - Launch of the ‘B Heard’ Project Young People's Film and training package

Friday 12th March 2010, 3-5pm, Stratford E15

The ‘B Heard Project’ is made up of a group of young people (16-19 yrs) from Tower Hamlets and Lewisham – with the aim of training practitioners in working and engaging with young people like themselves. The group successfully researched, developed and delivered a one day training package, including a film of focus groups held. This was delivered for the first time in January 2010, to a wide range of practitioners working with young people from across London, including Youth Workers, Social Workers, Connexions, Police and others. The training materials developed will shortly be available to all on the CWDC website.
The project was set up as part of a Childrens Workforce Development Council (CWDC) funded initiative, facilitated by LECP Training with participation of a number of youth projects. The B Heard Project focussed on supporting this group of 16 to 19 year old young people from ‘hard to reach communities’ to develop and deliver training for practitioners on what young people want from practitioners.

The whole project, from the beginning of planning, recruiting the young people, team building, training the young people to become trainers and the actual delivery of this ground breaking training has all been captured on a film. This film, and the shorter film on the focus groups, have both been produced, filmed and developed by another group of young people – BOOM Group.
This event is the ‘premier’ showing of the film, and there will be an opportunity to meet all the young people involved, ask questions, congratulate their success hear invited speakers, and partake of refreshments.

Advance booking is essential as there are limited places. You can download an application form from: http://www.lecp.org.uk/training and return it to: LECP Training & Workforce Development, 4th Floor Solar House, 1-9 Romford Road, Stratford, London E15 4LJ, training@londoneastconnexions.co.uk, Tel: 02085363630.

Training - Working across culture

21st April 2010, Stratford, London E15
This training is CPD certified (5.5 hours). Cost: £90 per person.

The cultural make up of London and the UK in general is becoming increasingly diverse and complex, when working with young people and other clients, it is inevitable that practitioners will be working with people from different cultural backgrounds to their own. How does this impact on their work? Can practitioners work effectively across different cultural divides? What are the challenges? Do practitioners need in-dept knowledge of the culture of the people they are working with?

The aim of the course is to provide practitioners with the skill and confidence to work and communicate across different and unfamiliar cultures without relying on stereotypes, thereby being able to meet the needs of the clients they work with. The course is interactive and focuses on practical issues and self-awareness.
Target group: Practitioners working with migrants/newly arrived immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers (i.e. youth workers, teaching assistants, mentors, employment and advice services, Careers Advisers, Connexions Advisers, Social Workers, Voluntary/Community organisations, etc)

Please complete a course application form, available from http://www.lecp.org.uk/training/

Calls - Online survey of Westminster’s voluntary and community groups

Voluntary Action Westminster is carrying out a survey of voluntary and community groups in Westminster, to find out more about their needs, and the impact of their services on local people.

We know that there are going to be huge public spending cuts in the years ahead. And these cuts will have a huge impact on local voluntary groups. Put simply, there will be less money available from local authorities, and more competition for what funding there is. By taking part in the survey, you’ll help us to understand what support voluntary organisations need during the tough times ahead, and to lobby on behalf of the sector at a local and regional level.

The survey asks questions about your organisation’s finances, so the person who does the survey should be someone who knows about this. It might be a director, finance manager, or member of your trustee board. If that’s not you, please help us by forwarding this email on.

Your responses will be kept strictly confidential. Where we publish data from this survey, we won’t include any information that could be used to identify individual organisations.

You can take the survey now at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/67M3S77
If you have any questions, please call 020 7723 1216 or email dmapp@vawcvs.org

Resources - At the end of the line - restoring the integrity of the UK's asylum system

In 2008 alone, more than 10,000 asylum seekers in the UK approached the British Red
Cross in need of emergency relief from destitution. The Red Cross is only one of dozens of
organisations – many of whom do not have asylum seekers or refugees as the core focus of
their work – that are increasingly finding themselves having to pick up the pieces of
Government policies which leave asylum seekers destitute and with no means of supporting
themselves. The situation has further deteriorated during 2009. This report aims to provide a
detailed overview of the human and financial costs of the current system and to propose
policy solutions which are humane, efficient and effective.
