MODA News - Funding, sustainability and ways forward: interim research report

MODA and Middlesex University have been working together on a research project about funding and resources available to migrant and minority organisations in London. Through a survey and other methods, the project gathered information about the role of these organisations, the services they provide, the community needs they address, the financial and organizational challenges they face and the creative ways they are finding to cope. The research also aims to explore the effects of the current economic and political climate on the sector and the role played by second tier organisations and other networks.

On June 8th we organised a very successful event in Middlesex’s Hendon Campus to launch the research interim report (click here to download) and discuss our preliminary findings with over 50 delegates, including minority organisations, funders, researchers and other stakeholders. The event also included a series of presentations and discussions (to see the programme and list of speakers click here). We would like to thank all those who participated and who generously gave their time to assist with for our research.

The research team will finalise the report in the next few weeks, but we are still gathering feedback on our report as well as discussing ways to move this project forward and develop some follow on activities. If you have got any comment or you want to know more please contact:

Events Day-Mer’s 21st Annual Cultural and Arts Festival

Park Festival on Sunday, 4 July, Clissold Park

Day Mer (Turkish/Kurdish Community Centre) has launched the 21st edition of its Culture and Arts Festival. This is now “the longest running festival in the borough and in the Turkish and Kurdish community. Just as every year, our festival activities once again brought to the fore strong messages of community solidarity and the need to create conditions in which the migrant communities and the rest of the society to work and live together”.

The festival includes a number of activities and events, culminating with the traditional Park Festival on Sunday, 4 July at Clissold Park. This year’s Park Festival will host the prominent Kurdish musician, Mikail Aslan, who have made a name for himself with his original synthesis of the traditional and contemporary Kurdish and Turkish music, along with Yeni Türkü, a band that has been bringing together Mediterranean and Anatolian melodies successfully over the last three decades, bringing forward the diversity of Anatolian culture. The programme of the event includes several other performances and there will also be stalls from various organisations giving out information, bookstalls and, of course, traditional food and drinks.

Resources - Development on the Move

Development on the Move: Measuring and Optimising Migration’s Economic and Social Impacts
Author: Laura Chappell, Ramona Angelescu-Naqvi, George Mavrotas and Dhananjayan
Published by IPPR, 21 May 2010, Price: £15.99

This report presents the main findings from the major global research project, Development on the Move: Measuring and Optimising Migration’s Economic and Social Impacts, carried out between 2006 and 2010 by the Global Development Network (GDN) and the Institute for Public Policy Research (ippr). This ground-breaking project has examined a wide range of migration’s impacts on development, by conducting primary research in seven countries, across six continents.

The project aimed to develop better methodologies for assessing migration’s impacts; improve the evidence base; analyse policy impacts and options; build research capacity on migration, and promote multi-disciplinary analysis. In doing so it contributes to answering the question as to whether, on balance, migration helps or hinders international development. The findings provide fresh and thought-provoking insights for policymakers and researchers alike.

Calls - ICAR @ Runnymede Trust appeal

ICAR (Information Centrer about Asylum and Refugees) is to be a casualty of higher education cuts and has to leave its current home at City University by 7 July 2010.

ICAR now hope to be housed by the Runnymede Trust, but in order to complete the move, they need to raise £15,000 for transfer costs.

"With the new change in government we believe that many key asylum policy issues, such as access to justice, detention, deportation, the role of the EU, and integration and citizenship, will remain in the spotlight and continue to impact on refugee, migrant and established UK populations. ICAR's contribution to promoting responsible and well-informed debate in this crucial area of humanitarian policy will therefore be needed as much as ever".
